Both times I ran it I stayed in Lincoln Park because it was less expensive and the hotel was a short walk to the L which gets you down to the start pretty easy (they run trains early that morning for the marathon). I did not have my kids with me either time but I have taken them there on other occasions and there's tons to do. Navy Pier is very cool. Places down near the start are extremely expensive so an outlying neighborhood that's along the L routes is a great bet if you're frugal like me ;-) Chicago is such an exciting marathon. The Congress Hotel is right across the street from the start and isn't crazy expensive considering its Chicago. You can watch the hustle and bustle from your hotel window - feeling part of the excitement - yet use your own bathroom and get to the start in just minutes. I loved it. -- good luck!
