Hey guys, I am writing a book about "Americana" and need an image (s) and/or stories about a couple of Jesup hamburger joints. Does anybody have same for the 301 Cafe?...
Phil B. replied:
The old DQ Fillmore, from back in the day. the Dairy Rance was not so popular in the very early 60 s. Back then The Pig, the 301, and several others got a lot of business. Not so specific on the place, just on the stories and imagery.
Tina P. replied:
Tastee Freeze, DQ or Dairy Ranch every Sunday evening after church. I think Harry Tyre owned the TF. I'll say too that I think most of us grew up driving down Cherry Street on Friday or Saturday night and would circle the bank and then drive down the street for the mile or so and circle McDonalds. I'm certain we knew whose car was coming toward us just by their headlights. Phil, have you ever read any of Ferroll Sams books? He was a Georgia author that passed away a few years ago. It's great stuff and pretty much the story of him growing up in Fayetteville Ga. He could really spin a story/yarn. He was a doctor that didn't start writing until in his late sixtys.
Phil B. replied:
Yes Tina, I am familiar with Sams' book. You guys are great to comment here. I have posted one of the first chapters of my book in draft form here. http://www.phillip-butler.com/our-america-excerpt/ Randy, thanks for the heads up too ... I need to see about getting in touch with some of these people. If you can help, I'd appreciate it very much.
