Anyone else go to that horrible dentist Dr. Gramse on North Main St. ?
Laura M. replied:
Thankfully we went to Dr. Tompkins..I remember some jerk that lived next to Nooney's on Somers Rd--he was awful so thank God my parents found us a great dentist!!
Suzie Q. replied:
Yup went to Dr. Tompkins !!
Joy Q. replied:
I went to Dr. Magovern too. I worked there for about a year, and found that dental was so not the field for me.:) I liked him though. never have I found anyone I trusted like him.
Scott M. replied:
We started with Dr. Nathan Perry on Somers Rd, then switched to Dr. EarleTompkins. To this day, I remember Dr. Perry only gave novocaine when he extracted a tooth, never for fillings. Dr. Tompkins may also have only used novocaine for extractions. Years later, I remember dentists being shocked when I told them, "skip the novocaine, I never had it growing up!"
Scott M. replied:
Norma Hamilton, as far as I can tell, Dr. Magovern is still alive, at age 82, and living in East Longmeadow.
Marcia T. replied:
Dr McGovern. Nice man quietly spoken and dreamy blue eyes . Still see him in grocery store once in a while. He looks the same now as he did in the 60's.
Kurt S. replied:
We went to Dr. Stone in downtown Springfield. I think he was trained by Josef Mengele!
Jim M. replied:
Downtown Springfield - a sadist named Dr. Lockwood (I called him Dr. Lockjaw).
Donna A. replied:
Dr. Brown was my dentist. Dr. Brown put in a filling (about 6 th grade), I went to the school dental appointment. Dr. Gramse poked and scraped at one of my teeth and told me I had a cavity. He removed the new filling. Back to Dr. Brown to get it re-filled. My mother was MAD!!!
David C. replied:
In the 1950 s My folks spent a small fortune with Dr. Gramse, I think a lot of the work he did was unnecessary. In 1965 when my tour in the Navy was up I went to see Dr. Gramse again. I remember he said the fillings in my teeth were terrible and ineptly done and they needed to be redone. The irony was the fillings were his own work before I had joined the Navy. I never went back to him.
Donna A. replied:
I remember him well. He was the school dentist. One year during a dental exam he scraped away at one of my teeth and then said I had a cavity. He scraped out a filling put in by Dr. Brown the week before.
Alice C. replied:
Sure did... As soon as I was earning my own money I switched to Dr Brown. When he only found one small cavity instead of the umpteen that Gramse said I had my parents were finally convinced that he was a quack and switched too.
Norma H. replied:
You guys all should have gone to Dr. Dwight Magovern!! He was the BEST dentist ever and he had such blue, blue eyes. Is he still alive?
