It took me 7 months to move up the waitlist at a rescue, these days you just have to be patient given the demand.

Adoptapet.com is great. They list rescues as well as people who need to rehome their pets. We have two small seniors and were nervous about adopting a larger dog from the shelter, without knowing that dog’s history. We ended up adopting a lab mix whose family was moving and couldn’t take him, it was the perfect adoption. The site charges a $90 adoption fee that goes to shelters.

What kind of dog are you looking for? I am a dog foster for shelters and currently have an adoptable dog.

Wags and whiskers. They’re up in Chico but they’re really responsive and have some great dogs.

There are a ton of rescues in the area, both breed specific and general rescues. Contact them and show an interest, maybe volunteer to foster, but get some direct contact and they will remember you when a dog becomes available.

Pet finder! It’s kind of like a forum that a lot of local rescues and shelters post on. You can filter the pets you see to fit your preferences and can change the search area. I used this to find one of my pups. I ended up going to the Solano shelter to get her.
