Used car dealer recommendations My GF needs a different car, so we're looking for dealer recommendations. I'd say the budget is probably $9k or less, and we're looking...

Go with shift.com or carmax.com if you want a peace of mind. With that budget, it's ok to pay a premium knowing that you aren't getting screwed over by some used car dealer. If you are adamant about going with a used car dealer, then I would advise getting a pre-purchase inspection. Cars that I would recommend are Honda Fit, Prius and Chevy Volt.

You should decide on the car you want first. The dealer follows.

Visit r/askcarsales. I also wrote a book about car buying, it's linked in the subreddit. In this day, you should decide on a model and pick a car before you even set foot at the dealership.

Reliable, good MPG, and cheap may be a bit of a stretch.
Having grown up with Volkswagens and owning/driving everything in the VWaG family, avoid them with a 9 1/2 foot pole. Yeah, Jettas are "cute," but the 5th and 6th gens are plagued with electrical issues, recalls, and TSBs. Plus, the DSG needs a huge mechatronics replacement and the timing belt will shred at 100k miles. The FSI motors get caked up thanks to California's PCV requirements and the TSI blow turbos like a Vegas hooker.
If you want all three, Toyotas (excluding the Matrix) are going to be your best bet. Thankfully Tacomas are out of the question (terrible MPG) due to their insane resale value.
Older generation Priuses are still kick ass in terms of reliability.

Just moved to Charlottesville from Hong Kong, need to buy used minivan. Need used cars dealerships recommendations Hi guys we just moved to this amazing town last week....

There's a [Carmax](https://www.carmax.com) in town. You'll find a decent local selection and have access to cars from other Carmax locations around the US that can be shipped here. They're known for no-haggle pricing - the price on the car is what you pay. Good luck!
DoctorinaBox replied:
Carmax is nice, and the sales people there are very friendly (they make flat rate per vehicle sold, not a % of sales price, so they are not as pushy for a higher end model). They can also transfer any vehicle withing a certain radius to the store for no charge (though the sales people will be pushy about it, understandably). The only thing is they are no-haggle, so they tend to value their vehicles ~2k above market value, and don't replace things like tires & belts pre-purchase (unless they won't pass a state inspection when leaving the lot).
Any Dealership besides them, be ready to haggle and to set some hard boundaries, as they work on commission.
Do research on the relative specifications for the car you're looking for, use sites like kbb.com to search for the relative price of the vehicle, and you should be okay.
A general rule for cars, though, is that if you can't afford to pay it off in 4 years, you can't afford to pay it off in 5, just because of the way interest work on installment loans. If you NEED a car, by all means, go ahead and take out a 60 month loan, but the shorter term will always be better if you can afford it.

I got my car in 2009 from the Auto Super Store on Pantops Mountain. They were great and patient and seemed legit. My car is still doing great today so I didn’t get a lemon

Yes dealers work off commission, so you'll have to negogiate, but they're pretty easy to negotiate with, in my opinion. If you come in with the value of the car from Kelly blue book and NADA, you can expect to pay fair retail price on it at a dealer. Carmax is typically, as another person said, above that rate. What's the price range you're looking at?
Reputable Used Car Dealership Recommendation? Hello! We are now searching for a reputable used car dealership in the general Roanoke area. Specifically, we are looking...
Atreyew replied:
Practically all used car lots in roanoke that aren't a big model dealership get their cars from the same auction lot. If you go to an actual dealership like burglund the prices are astronomical for the mileage. Whatever you do insist on taking it to a mechanic for a pre buy inspection. Also, look for Michelin tires, people that buy premium tires tend to keep up with maintenance. Honestly if you can make the drive it's worth looking into West Virginia, they price their vehicles more reasonably due to the income level there. AND STAY AWAY FROM EAST COAST AUTO SOURCE!

You're gonna be hard pressed to find a decent Subaru under 7 k at a dealer.

I had an excellent experience with Enterprise Car sales on Melrose Ave. The cars tend to have high miles for the age of the cars, but they are always in great condition and priced under Kelley Blue Book values.

Avoid ROANOKE AUTO SALES - I took a chance after some bad reviews about failing transmissions - well, it happened within a month on our new van, and even though they included a warranty, it didn't even pay for 1/2 the repair!

I drove over to Lynchburg and liked Carmax. They had a car in Bristol we wanted to look at and they delivered it for free to Lynchburg. We ended up passing on it but I found most of their cars were leased vehicles prior and in good shape. You can see the vehicles history and look at their vehicles on Carmax.com .

When I was looking for a used car, I noticed that the prices were much lower for mileage/condition in Northern VA and the Raleigh/Durham area. It's a pain to got so far, but if you can you'll probably get a much better deal since there is so much more competition in those places. I don't think the Roanoke market is large enough to offer good bargains, although you may be able to find a good deal on craigslist.

I don't always feel comfortable recommending things for big purchases like this, but I got my used car from Bailey's. It's been running for almost three years now with mild maintenance.
AT-ATsAsshole replied:
I'll start by saying too NOT use their in house financing, but Drive Time in buys a lot of their vehicles from rental companies, so at least you know the maintenance has been kept up. I got my car from them 4 years ago and it's been great.

I bought a used 2016 mid size SUV with 58 k miles at Priority for about 3 k under the blue book value. 2 years later I've had no problems with the vehicle and it's going great! They also offer a warranty where you can get things fixed there. I'd definitely recommend. I also see cars from priority everywhere in Roanoke. They're doing a lot of business.
