The bottle pictured is absolutely the worst! I bought 6 and neither would allow the water to flow. Almost killed my rats had I not been checking it regularly. Amanda L. replied:
Whether you see bugs on a rat or mouse, or you just witness scabs or itching, that pet and all other rats and mice in the room must be treated and their cages well cleaned. If you have other rats or mice and do not think they have parasites, they do; they just have few enough to not yet be observable, but will get worse over time and absolutely reinfect the observable one. Because mites are almost invisible to the human eye, and because mice and rats always have a few mites but under control, never doubt that your pet could have mites. Ectoparasites (parasites on the skin) must always be treated. The by far safest, most reliable, simplest, easiest, and least stressful method to treat these parasites is selamectin, sold as Revolution in the US and Stronghold in the UK. It involves one or two drops on, not in, the pet; non stressful cage cleaning, and no repetition or worries for at least a month and likely far longer. Directions and much more information are in the following document from the files section (Our many very helpful and interesting documents and collections can be found thus: click on 'files' under the banner; or click ON the banner; choose 'files'; or click on three dots; group info; files.): Treating Ectoparasites (Mites, Fleas, etc): The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: https://www.facebook.com/notes/rats-are-awesome/treating-ectoparasites-mites-fleas-etc-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/724243581023175 The next safest solution, ivermectin, has the disadvantage that it is 40x more dangerous than selamectin; the advantages are availability and price, but the disadvantages can be deadly. In the UK it is widely available labeled Beaphur; in the US you can buy a liquid version for cows for external use or a paste version for horses which they must ingest. Instructions are in the above listed document, as well as scientific research of comparison of the two methods. People will offer dozens of home remedies for ectoparasites. All I have encountered are dangerous in one way or another. I would ask that anyone who is still tempted to offer a home remedy first read the document linked above and see if it is listed as dangerous. If it isn’t, let Natasha know and she will research it. As protocol we close parasite posts as it is a magnet for misinformation. If you have any questions please feel free to message me
