Jennifer M. replied:
Jes Made and Sophisticakes are both very good. Sophisticakes is the more expensive of the two bakeries. We also like Weinrich's (Newtown Square) and Cakes & Candies by MaryEllen (East Goshen). Master Baker in West Chester is excellent as well, but they are more of a special order type of place. Clay's in Berwyn makes beautiful cakes, but their icing can sometimes have a noticeable taste from the dyes they use. It's a good place for a kid's birthday cake, as they can create any design you bring to them. Avoid the sheet cakes as they are dry. Ask for round if you try there. Their round cakes stay more moist. For an adult birthday and a serious cake lover, you may also want to consider Sweet Jazmine's in Berwyn. Incredible.
What's your favorite bakery for non-birthday cakes? I'm looking for fancier/higher end desserts.

Jennifer M. replied:
Aux Petites Delices in Wayne makes some very fancy desserts, and I've heard the new Delices et Chocolate in Ardmore is excellent. You can find some cool stuff at Cakes & Candies by MaryEllen in East Goshen and Sweet Trading Company in Narberth (and the latter is certified kosher). Bakery House in Bryn Mawr is another thought. In the city: Miel Patisserie and Isgro's Pastries. Their cannoli are out of this world.
David K. replied:
Termini Brothers! They make awesome cakes and pastries and Italian cookies. Their rum cakes are amazing! And they have two locations: South Philly and the Reading Terminal Market!

I'm one of the https://www.facebook.com/1471698783103622 Batter & Crumbs owners. We have a commercial kitchen and distribute our items to Seven Stones and Burlap and Bean in Media (and a bunch of other spots in Delco and Philly). We are opening a storefront bakery and cafe this year but that will be in South Philadelphia. We looked in Media but couldn't find the right spot. We also bake cakes and other vegan treats for special occasions and deliver locally free of charge. Check out Facebook, Instagram and website for pictures of what we do. batterandcrumbs.com

Any good bakeries nearby? Not really a fan of KYJ's and that's the only one I know about
Lauren K. replied:
Jes Made
Emil W. replied:
IF YOU want great Italian pastries, try Viso's bakery in Aston, you can get some of their products at Garden Cafe since they used to be there until they closed and they rented that space. For great French Bakery you gotta go to Strawberry Bakery it is the best for Croissant and all French pastries. KYJ's Bakery is old fashioned Polish/Ukrainian baked goods not so interesting anymore. Probably can get better pound cake at Entenmann's.

Honestly, as much as I love a mom and pop bakery cake, Acme also makes pretty good cakes and cupcakes. Never gone wrong. But love https://www.facebook.com/Carlycakes/ (not that you've actually asked about cakes!)
Karen W. replied:
Donna Marcozzi@Wayside Market is a trained pastry chef .... normally a few smaller items available in the store, but you can also special order a much wider selection. Sweet Jazmine's in Berwyn is great but you have to preorder at least a week ahead for most items.
Anyone know where I can get a lactose-free birthday cake?
Allison P. replied:
Jaquette's can make it with dairy-free frosting that is very good. Their cake still has dairy in it but my son (who is lactose intolerant) can handle it with a Lactaid. Viking in Ardmore can do a dairy-free cake that is pretty good. We have not loved. The Whole Foods vegan cake or Sweet Freedom.
