Do you know what kind of tree it is? If it's non-native or it's just outgrown it's space and become a hazard, then chop it down. If it's native, then it's good to keep it around if you can. And you can work around it. Take a look at the area around the tree. If there is or was green around them, then things can grow there. You just have to plant the right things. Have you tested your soil to confirm that it's bad? I would do that before cutting down a tree, even if it's only to save yourself some money. A good arborist can also tell you whether a tree is a problem and how best to manage it.
