Does anyone remember the doctor who roller skated down the hall of his office?
Maryanne D. replied:
WOW! Kind of glad i missed this conversation to start with! I don't know if Dad would even know all of this good stuff! I do remember Dr. Mackenzie and roller skates. And i remember Rudy Wells. But all that other good stuff was lost on me. I've forgotten more than I remember! And for sure Dad never got on roller skates! HA! Their halls weren't long enough for that! That office was tiny!!!!
Peggy H. replied:
For Louise's doctor question - I think it was Dr. McKenzie -his wife played the piano in the office.
Shambie C. replied:
I had Dr. Heimer AND Dr. Wells growing up. Never saw them on roller skates. Never met Dr. Mackenzie...
Mark M. replied:
Didn't Dr Mackenzie have another son Al, who was killed allegedly by kevin ferguson, keith's little brother?
Janice J. replied:
John Von Thron is an orthopedic Dr. in Jax. One of my daughters saw him for knee problems. John is the younger son. Jim is the Ob/gyn.
Mark V. replied:
Yep. There was a clothing shop next to The Rivers Edge called Weich Craft .
Louise B. replied:
Dr. Mackenzie sounds right. I didn't think it was Dr. Wells. Dr. Mackenzie played the piano, sang and roller skated down the hall. As soon as I saw the name it was a "that's it!" moment.
Circe A. replied:
Yes it was Dr Mackenzie! He was our crazy Dr for awhile. He was in the office near the Towers on A1A. One time I had strep throat and he gave me a shot of antibiotics in the rump. Then without a word he started playing a tune on the piano. He was such a character!
MaryAnne B. replied:
Once my mother was having an angina attack and Dr. and Mrs. MacKenzie both came off the beach in their bathing suits and took care of her.
Beth D. replied:
Those days are definitely long gone. The day we arrived in Cocoa Beach August 31, 1960 my dad suffered a heart attack. Dr Von Thron came out to the KoKo Motel to treat him. Some changes that come with time are wonderful while others not so!!
Beverly P. replied:
I remember those days. Dr Von Thron did a lot for us back in the day.
Carol R. replied:
My mother-in-law loved Dr. Von Thron and went to him for many, many years.
Kathy E. replied:
Dr. Heimer skated while doing rounds in Cape Canaveral Hospital in Dec 1972. My son Rob was in the hospital at that time. Dr. Heimer was a pediatrician in practice with Dr. Hadden and Dr. Harlow on 520 in Cocoa Beach.
Jim D. replied:
Dr MacKenzie had a son Ross and a daughter Susan. Susan was in my class. Although I never had him as my physician, I'm sure he's the one on skates. I'm a little fuzzy on the following, but pretty sure I have the basics. A several young people in CB got involved with Heroin back then and Dr MacKenzie got in some kind of trouble for prescribing Methadone for them to help them kick the addiction. It wasn't allowed back then. Addicts had to go to special clinics every day to get their daily dose of methadone. I don't think there were any of those around anywhere near us back then. I'm not sure if he got in any real trouble, or just some sort of reprimand, but remember thinking at the time he was being treated unfairly for just trying to help those dudes out.
Nancy M. replied:
Dr MacKenzie he also played the piano for you! Took his license and he did acupuncture
MaryAnne B. replied:
Dr. MacKenzie was a vegetarian way back when. Once Mrs. MacKenzie asked my Mother to have my Father keep him later at a Kiwanis meeting so she and the kids could cook out steaks! I don't think he drank either so it wasn't an easy task.
MaryAnne B. replied:
I sent Nelson there when he needed inoculations for college and Dr. MacKenzie gave them to him while on his roller skates!
Steve D. replied:
Hey a quick note on DR. Vonthron his kid is also a DR. and was treating my dad here in Jax when he passed.
MaryAnne B. replied:
I went to both of them in my college years and Dr. Wells is not the doctor with roller skates etc.
Keith K. replied:
It was Dr. Mackenzie and his office was just south of 1 st Street North and Orlando Ave, on the west side. He had two very nice daughters as well.
Mari H. replied:
C'mon Maryanne. We r all family! No dr ever skated to or for me! Mary Huggins, married Mike Hughes long time ago.
MaryAnne B. replied:
You all have it wrong! It wasn't Dr. Wells at all and it certainly wasn't Dr. Rudy Wells! Rudy was Dr. Well's son but Dr. Wells never used rollar skates in his office or other wise. It was another doctor who did that, I will think of his name soon.
Mari H. replied:
Dr Wells never skated to my visits, nor Knotts nor Von Thron. I must have missed that!
Barbara B. replied:
Dr. Wells was my Dr. And my mother took me to him for every little thing and I never saw him on roller skates.
MaryAnne B. replied:
I went to both of these doctors and also Von Thron & Dr. Able. Dr. Wells never did the wilder stuff but Dr. Mackenzie or whatever his name was did and he was fun. He gave both my husband and myself inoculations for college and he did that while on roller skates. He handled it well, BTW. I seem to remember a six million dollar man connection but it wasn't Dr. Wells on roller skates,
MaryAnne B. replied:
The doctor with the roller skates and the piano and the ping pong table was not Dr. Wells. Both of these doctors had their wives as their nurses but that's not anything unusual for that era. I'm darn sure it was Dr. Mackenzie people are thinking of and possibly Dr. Wells agreed to use his name in the write up or something.
Randi S. replied:
Dr. Mackenzie sounds familiar. The one on skates was in south CB and I know Dr. Wells was down there. When I google anything about a Dr. on roller skates in CB, it comes up with this article that I reposted...?
Randi S. replied:
Dr. Rudy Wells....he was also the name of a character on "The Six Million Dollar Man"
Randi S. replied:
Excerp from an article: The creator of "The Six Million Dollar Man" lived in Cocoa Beach. Martin Caidin, author of 'Cyborg', was the creator of the fictional Steve Austin and used the name of Dr. Rudy Wells in the novel with permission of a rather eccentric Cocoa Beach physician of the same name who used to wear roller skates in his office as he saw patients. In 1997, Caidin's ashes were scattered from the air over the Cocoa Beach coastline as he was particularly attached to the Space coast area.
Brevard county peeps! My general doctor recently retired and I am looking for a new doctor. My old one tended towards holistic approaches before he would prescribe...
Bridget G. replied:
I've only been going to Dr. Janis Black (Rockledge) for 2 years; it's been a good experience so far.
Kaitlyn H. replied:
Before I moved I use to go to Dr. Susan Fair. She is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) and she practices the holistic approach that you are looking for. She is great and she talks to you as one of her own not like some doctors out there who talk down to you. Just a little tip for your research since you are looking for more of a holistic type of doctor make sure they have "D.O." after their name not "M.D." Best of luck
Amber P. replied:
Dr. Rebecca Hunton is amazing down in Viera..she doesn't take insurance though...but she is a first line therapy doctor which means they treat with food first, then supplements, then medication. She is amazing!
If anyone knows of any reputable spas/doctor's offices/ plastic surgeons or dermatologists looking for an Esthetician in the Brevard area please let me know:) I am...
