A GUIDE TO LIVING AT ELMGROVE HOUSE

INTRODUCTION

Elmgrove House is a handsome Victorian villa situated on the outskirts of Inverness. We are in a quiet residential area close to the River Ness with extensive gardens and outdoor space. The home is easily accessible from Inverness town centre either a 15 minute walk or using the main bus route.

Various places of interest are within easy access including Eden Court theatre, Maple Ridge Hotel and restaurant, St Andrews Cathedral, Bught Park and The Floral Hall giving many opportunities for residents and families to enjoy time away from the home.

Please take the time to read through this Information Booklet to ensure you choose the perfect setting for your loved one.

ENVIRONMENT

The Home itself has three pleasant lounges available each of which affords views over the beautiful well-kept gardens and driveway while the spacious dining room provides an elegant setting in which to enjoy the excellent cuisine.

There are 27 single bedrooms, over two floors. Access to the first floor is aided by a six person passenger lift and a chair lift on the small staircase. All rooms are equipped with washbasins, television points, central heating and the usual furnishings. The Emergency Nurse Call System is adjacent to the bed. Residents are also encouraged to bring with them small items of cherished furniture and other keepsakes and mementoes to personalise their environment.

Three specially adapted Bathrooms are available for residents use. One of which has been recently refurbished to create a wet room / walk in shower. Baths are equipped with a Bath Hoist for safety should this be necessary. Various other Toilet facilities, clearly signposted, are situated throughout the Home.

There is a large catering kitchen from where all meals are served at present. Tea and Coffee making facilities are available and families are welcome to join us for meals and snacks at any time.

PHILOSOPHY OF CARE

It is the aim of everyone at Elmgrove House to... show more
provide our residents with a comfortable and enjoyable home within a friendly and companionable atmosphere. The contentment and well being of all our residents is paramount to our care philosophy.

We provide a person centred approach to all our residents. We understand that everyone is unique and that personality, experience, knowledge, preferences and life history are what make people who they are. We will respect and aim to preserve this.

Our residents may have some limitations associated with their medical conditions but we will strive to work with and around these to ensure a feeling of well being for all our residents. We will ensure that every person in our care is given the time to do things at their own pace and in their own way, making choices and decisions for themselves focussing on what our residents can do and not what they cannot. Our support will be tailored to the requirements and abilities of each individual at any given time.

All our staff are aware that people change over time and we will adapt to these changes. All new information will be recorded and shared with all staff to ensure everyone is fully aware and adopts the changes immediately. The needs and emotions of each person is the focal point around which all our care is planned.

As a team we understand that the world is constantly changing and for us to be successful we must change with it. We welcome new ideas and will adopt changes that will improve the service we are giving.

STAFF TEAM

Our Care Staff Team comprises our Home Manager, Melony Savage-Lowden, and her dedicated team of Senior Carers, Care Assistants and Housekeepers.

As per government guidelines all staff must be a member of the PVG Scheme and registered with the SSSC.

All staff receive intensive and continuous training to ensure our residents receive the best possible care, attending NHS courses, completing in-house training modules, following an established SQA format. A requirement of the SSSC is that all Care Staff are qualified to Level 2 in Health and Social Care.

The Office is staffed by Angela Lyon, our Bookkeeper and Administrator, who is available to answer any questions you may have with regards to fees and expenses.

MEDICAL CARE

Residents from the Inverness area will remain on the list of their own General Practitioners, or a local one can be arranged for new residents from further afield.

Medications are prescribed by these G.P.’s on a monthly basis and processed through our preferred pharmacist, Donald Bolger, of Great Glen Pharmacy, Drumnadrochit. They deliver medications promptly and will make special journeys if the medication required is needed urgently.

District Nurses visit on a daily basis to cover regular nursing and/or occasional emergency assessments.

MEALS

Resident’s individual diets and tastes are taken into account during our menu planning. They are balanced meals approved by NHS dieticians and Nutritionists. There is always a vegetarian option and snacks are generally available should they prefer a lighter option.

SPIRITUAL, SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL CARE

Elmgrove House prides itself on the wide range of activities in which residents are able to participate according to their wishes and abilities. Every assistance is given by the staff to help residents to be as active as their condition permits.

Besides television, DVD’S and special feature films are shown weekly. Indoor activities such as card games, board games, dominoes and personal hobbies such as knitting, arts and crafts, are encouraged. Bingo and Musical Bingo sessions and group entertainment is arranged according to demand.

An informal programme of entertainment is arranged at Elmgrove House. This includes traditional highland music, highland dancers, accordionist and vocalists. We are always open to new ideas, in respect to entertainment, and would welcome family members’ participating, leading or just suggesting other events.

Many outdoor recreational activities are available. For interested residents visits are arranged to the floral hall, cathedral tearooms, Simpsons garden centre and local bowling centre.

We actively encourage family members to take their loved ones out as often as possible to maintain community contacts.

VISITORS

Elmgrove House is open at any time for visitors and refreshments will generally be offered. Occasionally it is possible for relatives to join their loved ones for lunch/supper. In accordance with our Pets Policy we appreciate that animals could be an important part of a residents life therefore we do not discourage from bringing pets into the home though they would be expected to take full responsibility for the animals’ behaviour.
