Does anyone have a short term or long term rental who will allow dogs? We are mid-late 30's professional couple. We are active people and really enjoy the outdoors. We do not smoke!   80% leave in the first six months. It's because their idealized picture of what it will be like is NOT what it's like. To make it here one has to have NO expectations and be very accepting of how it is. It is what it is and asking yourself "Why?" is pointless. Go with the flow. As you will read on www.VImovingcenter.com you will see that a pre-move visit is highly recommended. That's where you come here, and don't act like you're on vacation. Go to the bank, and stand in line, go to the grocery store and stand in line, go to WAPA and stand in line, go to the bank and stand in line, go to the post office and stand in line, drive during peak hours and sit in traffic. Be prepared to pay about twice as much for things. Be prepared to not being able to get certain things. Drive around and try to find an apartment that is affordable, and in a place in which you would not be uncomfortable. Be prepared to get eaten by insects, as new blood is highly regarded by them. Be sure to find out what an aloe plant looks like, because you will get burned by the sun. Shop for cars just to get an idea of how expensive they are. Spend some time at a local's place and try to understand the accent. Try to find a place to do your laundry. Try to learn water conservation (Navy showers, don't flush for #1, re-use grey water, etc). These are just a few of the things that you want to do on your pre-move visit. Try to take a couple weeks, or even better, a month, and just act as though you already live here. Don't go out parting, don't go out to restaurants, don't go on boating trips, etc. I'm sure others will chime in, but this are just a few of the things I have learned in my over 18 years here.

  Mr. Smith, as you are from here, you know as well as I that these comments are not fleeting. All government is corrupt, but ours more so than most. Since the only Industry we have here is tourism, we rely on visitors all year. They are our bread and butter. But someone visiting for a week or two is not the same as someone living here. I commend you on your presentation of the image of St. Thomas, but the viewpoint is different for someone from the states than it is for those that are "bahn heah". Just sayin'. Those in the states just have a different mentality than us here. Like I said, I'm not trying to argue, so this is my last post on the subject. Check out www.vimovingcenter.com, and you will find that there are many people willing to lend their experience to those that are planning on moving here. It's an absolutely wonderful place to live, and I wouldn't live anywhere else. But caveat emptor...
