About us

Murphy's Underdog Training, or M.U.T., is a dog training company based out of Jacksonville, North Carolina. While we are based out of Jacksonville we do offer services to the local area as well, traveling to Wilmington, Morehead City, and New Bern.

We offer all types of training for dogs of any age and breed, from the 12 week old puppy to the 10 year old dog. Our training programs are tailored to every dog/handler team because we understand that every dog and owner are different and have different needs.

We offer several types of training such as:

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program - This is for the first time dog owner that just bought a new puppy. The age requirements start at 12 weeks old (as long as they have had all their shots) and goes up to a maximum of 1 year of age. It combines puppy/dog education with the very basic of dog obedience. Upon completion of this program your dog will be registered as completing the course with the AKC but more importantly the owner(s) will have a greater understanding of proper dog ownership, and the dog will have a basic understanding of obedience such as walking on a leash and coming when called. Requirements - Dedication to the training and a copy of the puppy's shot record

AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program - The CGC Program focuses on dog obedience. The dog/handler team are taught such things as healing on a leash, sit, down, stay, recall (coming when called), interaction with strange people and strange dogs, and focus. This is a great confidence builder for both the dog and owner. By the time you successfully finish the CGC program you will be able to enjoy taking your dog on a walk without it pulling on a leash, you will be able to recall your dog from a short distance, and you will have a much more enjoyable dog ownership experience. Upon completion your dog will be registered with the AKC as having completed the CGC Evaluation. Not only dog completion of this program make for a much more enjoyable experience, it... show more
may actually be able to save you money. Some homeowners insurance and rental insurance companies increase your rates on what are considered hi-risk breeds (such as German Shepherds, Pitbulls, and Rottweilers). Now several insurance companies out there are offering discounts if you have completed the CGC program. Requirements: Dedication to the program and a copy of the dog's shot records (S.T.A.R. Puppy program is recommended but not required).

Canine Companion (Advanced CGC) Program - This program is the next level after the CGC program. It teaches a more advanced level of obedience beyond what the CGC does, adding real life scenarios and distractions to the test events. The training in this program makes taking your dog into dog-friendly establishments a much easier process. THIS DOES NOT GIVE YOU FULL ACCESS PRIVILEGES THAT A FULL ACCESS SERVICE DOG HAS! This test is only a few steps away from the Therapy Dog International test, so if you area interested in going the Therapy Dog route this would be a good direction to go. Requirements: Completion of the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program, Dedication to the program, and a copy of the dog's shot record)

Specialized Training - If you're not interested in any of the specific AKC dog training programs above we can customize a program to fit your needs. If you have a problem with you dog that you want us to help fix, you only need help with walking on a leash, or want to keep your dog off the furniture...we can do that.

Training Costs:

Evaluation - FREE: We come to your home and do a brief interview with you to find out what your expectations are, how much of a commitment you plan to put into training your dog, and then we meet your dog and "interview" him/her.

CGC and Advance CGC Evaluation - $25: We will give you the CGC or Advanced CGC test just as if you had taken the course. If you have already trained your dog and feel it can pass the course this is a cheap way to get the certification. We will test you and the dog up to two times. The first time, if the dog does not pass, we will give you thorough feedback on what you need to do with the dog and then test you again within the next two weeks.

S.T.A.R. Puppy Program - This is a 6 week course and the cost is $250.

AKC CGC Program - This is a 6 week course and the cost starts at $400.

AKC Advanced CGC Program - This is a 6 week course and the cost starts at $550.

***If you take more than one course there is a 25% discount on your next course.

Prices are subject to change.
