Looking for an *authentic* Chinese restaurant - any suggestions from native Chinese/people who have lived in China? I'm looking for a Chinese restaurant that sells authentic Chinese food, not the anglicised "sweet and sour fried chicken balls" that you get in a lot of Chinese takeaways. I'm talking about proper δΈεθ, for instance, and authentic dishes from all over China. Can anyone recommend anywhere? These places are sometimes diamonds in the rough...

I have not lived in China, nor am Chinese, but [Chop Chop](http://www.chop-chop.co.uk/) is very well thought of. You know somewhere is good if they make their own noodles but I cannot comment if they specialise in a particular area (North East - Dongbei for instance) of China that influences their menu. Edit: Their [food factory webpage](http://www.chop-chop.co.uk/menu/chop-chop-food-factory/) confirms they do actually specialise in dong bei style in selling wholesale so I wonder if that translates to their restaurant menu?!...

Foodies of Edinburgh: What are your secrets? Foodies of Edinburgh: what are your secrets? Where do you love to eat which no one seems to know about? Where do you do your shopping? Here are a few of my own:
One of my favourite places to have lunch is a tiny Vietnamese restaurant on Grove Street called [**Vietnam House Restaurant**](http://www.vietnamhousescotland.com/). Fantastic food and a very affordable price.
Recently been having late weekend lunches at a cafe called [**Rocksalt**](http://www.list.co.uk/place/103322-rocksalt-cafe-deli/) at the bottom of Constitution Street. Nice open planned seating with fantastic choices of sandwiches, hot food and drinks.
When it comes to buying spices, never buy them from the supermarket - go to an ethnic supermarket, they will always have the exact same spices in a larger quantity and for a cheaper price. [**Pat's Chung Ying**](http://www.patschungying.co.uk/) has a wide range of spices as well as other Asian foods.

I went to [Chop Chop] (http://www.chop-chop.co.uk/) recently for a friends birthday and the food was divine, the buffet deals they do are awesome. Definitely not your typical Chinese restaurant food. My most recent food addiction is with [Nagoya] (http://www.inagoya.co.uk/), the lunchtime sushi deal is just too good to resist. A real little secret.
