About us

This page and concept was founded by Jan Cooper in 2011. Shocked at seeing an endless stream of unwanted kittens coming through just one local shelter, not to mention all the adult cats languishing in their pens for months on end, waiting to be adopted, Jan knew that the answer was de-sexing. Prevention rather than cure.

As a fan of the film ‘Pay It Forward’ and TV programmes such as Secret Millionaire, Jan had an idea. ‘What if all the people who could afford to help someone else, by paying for one pet to be de-sexed, were to offer to do just that?’ If half the people in the country could perform one altruistic act for the other half, the problem would be solved overnight!!! A huge ambition, but from small acorns do mighty Oaks grow. And so, Help Someone Desex Their Pet was created with this message at its core.

Today, the original altruistic concept is still very much in our minds and many people have taken up the idea and done just that. However, we now have a great database of all the de-sexing deals/campaigns happening around New Zealand, which is updated regularly. We provide advice and information on de-sexing as much as we can. We share good news, deals and ideas about de-sexing. We encourage everyone to talk to their family, friends and colleagues about the importance of de-sexing – you can be part of the solution by simply persuading someone to get their pet fixed.

Many families/people now find themselves guardians of at least one cat, usually more, when they didn’t plan to have any. We all know how a little stray turns up on your doorstep and makes herself at home … and often has her kittens too. Or, a relative or friend has a litter and begs you take one. Against your better judgement, realising money is tight, you can’t say ‘no’ … your heart melts and you give in. Before you know it, you’re in trouble with kittens or puppies everywhere. You can’t afford to put petrol in the car, or pay the electricity, never... show more
mind de-sex an animal. What do you do? Where do you go? You need help.

In late 2013, Chris Scott also joined the page as another Page Manager. Chris is one of the original ‘fans’ of the page and also has experience volunteering in animal rescue. Together, we hope you’ll find the help you need on this page. We do NOT do any de-sexing ourselves – we simply share the information and campaign to spread the ‘Desexy’ word! If you want to know about any de-sexing in your area, just ask. We promise to always answer your questions if we can.

We do not do any fundraising either. We are simply an idea, a campaign.

What we DO have though, is the country's only National Desexing Database. We don't publish this in its entirety as it changes on a daily basis, but if you want to know whether there are any campaigns in your area, please send us a PM and we'll let you know your options.

HOW TO HELP SOMEONE
• It may be someone you already know – a relative, friend, neighbour … they may have a cat that has had a litter of kittens – how about offering to help fix the mother cat?
• If you don’t know of anyone, you could speak to your local vet and offer to pay for the pet of the next person who comes in for help but cannot afford their full price.
• Check out the Buy/Sell and Free Facebook pages in your area – kittens are always advertised during the Summer – offer to help with de-sexing the mother. Or one of the kittens (they need to be over 10-11 weeks old).
• Keep checking out this page (Help Someone) … we sometimes get people asking for help – you could step in and offer to help them.

POINTS TO CONSIDER
• Be tactful – some people will be over-whelmed with an offer of help.
• You could either say ‘pay it forward one day’ or if they want to repay you, suggest they donate to another animal rescue instead.
• Be careful with money transactions – even with people you know, money can cause rifts – best to pay the bill at the Vet in advance, then there is no room for mis-understanding.
• A great idea is to buy a De-sexing Gift Voucher from KittyCat Fixers – they work just like a gift voucher.
