I’d like to share my experience of the Dunbar electrician George Sutherland during our recent house renovation at Tulliallan. Mr. Sutherland rewired the ground floor of our property; he also fitted 2 new consumer units (fuse boards) and smoke alarms. During the renovation Mr. Sutherland had to take time out from our renovation and supplied an unqualified, unsupervised stand in who worked for him. I expressed concerns that the work he was carrying out was for building warrants and both Mr. Sutherland and his unqualified unsupervised stand in assured me that the job and building warrants would be overseen by Mr. Sutherland who was a member of Select (Scottish electricians). During this period Mr. Sutherland’s stand in drilled through walls into 2 central heating pipes (one needed replacement) and also screwed into one of the kitchen lighting wires (he fitted) which required hacking a hole in our newly finished kitchen wall to replace the damaged wiring. Mr. Sutherland offered no apologies, no offer to pay for the replacement central heating pipes or repair the wall in our new kitchen but he did manage to send his invoices for around £5000.00 GBP which we paid. When it came to certificating the 2 consumer units, smoke alarms and ground floor rewire that he carried out Mr. Sutherland just ignored my efforts to contact him and was happy to blank us even though the time limit for our building warrants was running out which would have necessitated reapplication. Having explained our dilemma to the council concerning Mr. Sutherland ignoring our attempts to contact him the council recommended their “Trusted Trader” scheme. We asked Cross Country electricians to check Mr. Sutherlands work and certificate the property even though it was short notice and inconvenient for them they came and carried out the works necessary which included the replacement of all smoke alarms as the ones fitted by Mr. Sutherland were now obsolete making our house insurance invalid if our house had burnt down! Alarm bells should have rung when Mr. Sutherland told me that he hadn’t bothered to get the electric building warrants signed off for his own house extension. Mr. Sutherland will therefore be unable to sell his house for its market value until he reapplies. Uncompleted building warrants is a standard buyers price reduction strategy during a property purchase. If you’re thinking of electrics give this “Clown” a miss as when you come to get your building warrants signed off “JOKER GEORGE” Sutherland won’t be making you laugh. My recommendation for electrical work would be Cross Country electricians of Haddington: reliable & trustworthy (remember where you heard it first) Merry Xmas everyone Jonathan Celaschi B.Sc. M.Sc.
