I thought that was WAY high considering we will probably owe a couple thousand due to unemployment (yes even though we had tax taken out, they still get you) Does anyone know any other recommendations? Any help would be appreciated. Happy to call around!

The year I switched I filled out both intuit and freetaxusa and the refund amounts were within a dollar. After that I stopped buying Intuit's software. FreeTaxUSA remembers my information from last year and is the typical "answer questions enter amounts" software. With extr explanations of needed. It works in a browser so chromebook users can use it. Working with computers I would recommend using incognito mode to stop extensions from reading the website. If on PC I would go as far as using a brand new install of Firefox, or if you already have FF get Brave browser.

However, they don’t allow more then one state - So this year I’ll have to use Turbo Tax (which requires $40 for deluxe to file my 1098T, and $40 per state) so i’m out of $120. Does anyone know if free tax usa allows these things on their site for free/minimal cost? Next year, i’ll only have one state tax, so i’ll be going back to Credit Karma.

You only need a CPA if you want to setup an S-corp or something similar.

nevertoolate1983 replied:I found www.OLT.com (OnLine Taxes) through the IRS free file site. Free for most and *very* cheap for everyone else. Their customer service is meh, but otherwise would recommend. Edit: A comment above said something about OLT being less cyber-secure than other options. So maybe I’ll switch my vote to www.freetaxusa.com (which seems to be doing quite well in this thread).

It's good at dealing with my multiple state tax filing - there's a certain order you have to do it in. I only pay like $25 every year, about $13 for each state. Also, one year I had to amend my taxes after my job messed up my W2, and it was easy to go in and fix it.

meamemg replied:If you don't qualify for freefile (income too high, or tax is too complicated), I highly recommend www.freetaxusa.com. They don't really have any premium additions with much upsell, just paying a small amount for extra support and/or for state returns. Even if you itemize, have capital gains, etc. it is still free. Biggest downside is that state return is not free.

It's not too difficult to do them yourself online. There are several online programs that make it rather simple. Freetaxusa.com and h&r block has one too. I've used them both. I've been doing my own for years. And they are very reasonably priced. I've mostly used free tax. I can even go into previous years and print them whenever I need.
