  Hi, all. I need unbiased information about what my rights are in the hospital in terms of a vaginal breech birth. I've had 2 previously (2000, 2003) however my OB who was the one who informed me at the time that I should not let anyone give me a c-section without first trying vaginally (his years of experience led him to believe I would have no issues at all delivering either of my children vaginal breech) has since retired. I quite like my new OB and I feel more comfortable with the idea of having my baby in the hospital but my OB works with a group of dr's and there is a high chance she may not be there for the birth. What if the attending OB/nurses are against vaginal breech (they likely won't be experienced in it)? I don't want to be railroaded into having a c-section in the hospital once I'm there in the middle of labouring. I'm currently 31 weeks and baby is frank breech which is the position both of my daughters were born in. I know that logically there is still time for him to turn, but I know even more logically after discussion with my previous OB that I likely have an odd shaped uterus that prevents my babies from doing this and I need to prepare myself for the high likelihood that he won't turn. So, here I am seeking information about my legal rights in the hospital.

  YOU have already done this! Twice! YOU are totally capable! You also have the right to refuse any treatment. Also, Childbirth Connection (www.childbirthconnection.org) publishes a pamphlet called The Rights Of Childbearing Women .....check that out, so you can feel confident in your rights .... and have a doula and/or your partner who can advocate for your choices when you are in labour!

  Also, childbirthconnection.org -- great information on their website; they also have a publication called "Guide to a Healthy Birth" that is a great little booklet that you can read in one sitting. It has a section on VBAC. You can get it free from their website (you have to pay shipping); I'd also be happy to send it to you or her for free, if you'd like to pm me with an address.

They need to find a good OB and hospital. Does anyone have any recommendations? She is going to contact the CAM, but isn't too sure on how she feels working with a midwife, since she's only seen a doctor. Any info would help.   Well, if she's not so into the natural birth side of the spectrum she might find some of the folks there off-putting, but you can start with Blossom Birth in Palo Alto. Hospital stats are easily looked up: there are only 4 or 5 hospitals in San Mateo county, but the SF county hospitals are pretty close to San Mateo and Stanford or UCSF are the ones for high risk. If this is a first baby, I highly recommend childbirthconnection.org 's general tips for choosing a care provider. They're committed to evidence based health care, and I'm a fan of evidence.
