Janice H. asked:I would like to ask a question. I got a tick bite two years ago, had the bulls eye rash, had two tests, one positive, one negative. I was put on an antibiotic for two weeks and after a couple of months I did another course for four or five weeks. The bite still flares and itches intensely. Certain things seem to trigger that itching, but there is a lump there that has never gone away. Has anyone experienced this? I don't think it's going to stop. My doctor didn't have any suggestions and now I'm about ready to show it to my dermatologist. Even waking me in the night. I've had a cardiac work up and was cleared. I've never had cardiac disease. My bp is low, unless in a lot of pain. A nutritionist is helping me. Lyme blood tests always came out negative, took chemo,biologic meds/infusions but rashes,fevers, joint damage,pain nothin ever completely worked and it never went away. now lymph nodes are acting up. ive heard its cancer from a rheumy at Cleveland clinic, was told I have few months left, well that whacko was wrong because it's been close to a year and im still around. where can I go, who to see if this is really lyme? only "true rife" scan showed it , blood work never makes any sense, joint damage continues. these past 3 years were horrible, my legs, rt side of face have been swollen all this time, fibro points and fatigue got slightly better but I still have really bad days. all this $$$$$ and time wasted and im still in a crappy shapeLindsay L. replied:Don't go to mayo either. Katie S. replied:Yes I see a Lyme literate neurologist who is an ILADS member. He is wonderful. I have severe neurological symptoms and had brain surgery back in 2010 for trigeminal neuralgia and have encephalitis episodes. He has been pivotal in getting insurance to pay for iv antibiotics after being diagnosed with Lyme over 3 years ago. If you have neurologic symptoms and Lyme I would highly recommended seeing a neurologist but find a Lyme literate one. I went through many who told me that Lyme had nothing to do with my neurological problems but offered no other answer and some who said it "was all in my head". Now I'm on iv doxy after an allergic reaction to rocephin and am finalllyyyy seeing some positive change after three years on oral antibiotic cocktails. Good luck!!

They measure against the ilads data, which is very different. The tick was fully removed, still flat, had perhaps not been attached long and is maybe a dog tick she picked up in Maine. We did go to the ER and had it removed there, thinking that they would analyze it (not so) and prescribe a preventive dose of abx. On our insistence after he refused, the doctor went to talk with the microbiologist, who confirmed what we said (!!) and prescribed a 1-day dose of Amoxicillin. We kept the tick to get it tested by a vet (!!). Now, what I'm trying to decide is whether the risk is great enough that it's worth the fight and effort (and missed work) to go and find a doctor who's willing to prescribe a 28-day round of Cefurocime. Any feedback from the trenches? Thanks so much for your help!!Jenn W. replied:They gave you 1 day? Ugh!!! You need to find a LLMD or ND who can prescribe. You can review their different approaches on line.Courtney T. replied:First off, there are local support groups in some areas. Often, you can look on fb or Google for your area. Second, this a brief list to get you started. Lyme Basics 1) Check fx of hypothalamus, liver, kidneys, pituitary, thyroid (free T3, Free T4 and TSH), adrenals. 2) Decrease toxin exposure (including mold) in all things and increase detox 3) Watch your diet including sugars, folic acid, etc. 4) Test/treat for methylation issues. MTHFR. 5) Treat underlying viruses 6) Build immune system and avoid Steroids 7) Check to make sure vitamins are at good level, especially magnesium, iron, zinc, b12. 8) Make sure you are treating co infections that are NOT bacteria (like Babesia) with something other than just antibiotics. Almost all, if not all, lyme comes with do infections. 9) eliminate all parasites. 9) lyme takes three forms: spirochete, cyst, and biofilm and the same treatments don't work on all of these 10) All lyme specialists are not created equal. If they cannot address these things, find a new specialist. 11) There is no single thing that works. If someone claims this, run for the hills. Improved immune system does not mean the lyme and co infections are gone. 12) make sure your doctor follows ILADS not IDSA/CDC. 13) Do your research! Form a network of experienced sounding boards. 14) Manage stress through meditation, yoga, or some other healthy activity. 15) Everybody needs to know that treatment must be highly individualized based on your body and its infections. There are multiple strains of LD and co's. Seek expert medical treatment and, yes, you will likely have to drive to a different state.

ILADS.org is a great place to get the important basics. Many of us use the lab Igenex. Where are you? Hopefully some one near you can help with finding a local Lyme literate physician. Many get multiple infections from the same tick or even multiple bites. Coinfections can be just as bad or worse than just Lyme.
