Or rent a camper....more expensive but no hotel bills to compensate. Was around $300Can a day - but no hotel charges. We had a Bolero camper which was great for 2 (and space for 2 more) & did an unbelievable 33 mpg (diesel) ,Recommend http://www.iconicmotorhomes.com/ who were great and have a base at Auckland airport. You can literally and legally stop anywhere with a camper van in NZ, not necessarily camp sites - unless a prohibition sign is up (only saw 1 in a month of touring).
