About us
Emmaus Brighton & Hove is the largest Emmaus Community in the UK. We have 48 resident Companions who staff:
The Secondhand superstore(furniture and other goods) Portslade
The Emporium (Retro, vintage and up-cycled goods) Portslade
Revive@emmaus (Cafe & tearoom) Portslade
The greenhous (plants, gardening goods, gardens & Community allotments) Portslade
Emmaus by the sea, Southwick
Our community and main site are situated in Portslade on the south coast of England 4 miles west of the centre of Brighton.
Emmaus Communities enable people to move on from homelessness, providing work and a home in a supportive, family environment. Companions, as residents are known, work full time collecting and reselling donated furniture. This work supports the Community financially and enables residents to develop skills, rebuild their self-respect and help others in greater need.
Central to the work of an Emmaus community is helping others. For more on this aspect of our work see our "How we help" section on our website.
Companions receive accommodation, food, clothing and a small weekly allowance, but for many, the greatest benefit is a fresh start. To join a Community, they sign off unemployment benefits and agree to participate in the life and work of the Community to the best of their abilities.
Emmaus is a secular movement, spanning 36 countries, with 24 Communities in the UK. Each Community aims to become self-supporting, with any surplus donated to others in need.

CherryInHove replied:If you can afford it, I'd recommend getting a new mattress. You can get a decent one from [mattressman](http://www.mattressman.co.uk/) delivered for not too much. Everything else is OK to get used I'd say. I highly recommend [Emmaus](http://www.emmausbrighton.co.uk/). People donate stuff they don't need, homeless people fix it up, restore it, then sell it in the shop for not much money and make money. I've got some really decent furniture from there (Glass top dining table with metal frame for £26). They do sofas, tables, chairs, cupboards, everything.
