I've found three which seem to be pretty highly reviewed: the Green Tortoise hostel in North Beach and the Adelaide Hostel and USA Hostels SF by Union Square. To anyone who has stayed in one of these hostels or lives in/near them, how would you rate them and the area? I'm 23, female, with quite a bit of travelling experience, but it's been a long time since I was last in SF. I'd like to be within walking distance to Union Square (to do some shopping before I leave the country) and not too far from good cafes/bars/restaurants. Any recommendations are welcome, thanks!

  Two pretty cool bars are [Bourbon & Branch](http://www.bourbonandbranch.com/) and the bar in the Clift Hotel a couple blocks away. Bourbon and branch has a sign outside that says "The Anti-Saloon League" and can seem sketchy but its a great place. Just ring the buzzer by the door and the password is "books". The clift hotel bar has paintings that slowly move. Both places are a little pricey. If you like Indian food, I recommend any of the Pakwan restaurants. You can also find Ethiopian restaurants in SF, those are good too.
