  Jewish tour of the Lower East Sidehttps://www.walksofnewyork.com , walk the Brooklyn Bridge, Tour the Jewish Synogogue on the Lower East Side which is now a museum http://www.eldridgestreet.org and close by is the Tenemant Museum http://www.tenement.org , which on certain days has a Jewish Family as the focus. Do a self tour of anywhere in NYC There are lots of podcast tours you could hook into.

Will be staying in Times Square area. They plan on going to a play, and can probably figure out which they'd like to see. But as far as other things to do and/or see (I know here are lots), any recommendations? They are considering getting tickets for one of the packaged tours (bus/shuttle) that's available. Does anyone know if that's worth it? And if so, any recommendations on a specific tour or company? Anything you offer would be appreciated. Thanks!

  There is a fabulous company called Walks of New York. They have some amazing tours which you can do with a small group or even privately. The owner Jason does a lot of the tours himself and is excellent; knowledgeable, bright, articulate and knows his audience. They just added a Broadway tour which included a back stage tour of a theater. Check out their website at www.walksofnewyork.com You won't find a better walking tour company in the city! I also recommend a trip to Eataly - and if they can book a tasting or lesson there that is usually a great experience - especially for foodies. Early October would be a great time to walk the High Line - a very unique NY experience. The bus tours are good for an overall experience. I recommend the Big Bus Tour. You can take an uptown loop or a downtown loop and hop off and on at various locations. Of course the experience depends on the knowledge of the bus driver as some are better than others.
