Also, rollergirl.ca has a great info section for "fresh meat" about gear, etc.
Question- I'm looking at ordering skates & some placesa recommend if you're over 190 lbs you should get aluminum plates... yes? no? does it make a big difference?

I'm in the same boat so have done a lot of research on this. Basically it's about what you want to invest and how far you intend to go with the sport. Most websites will recommend aluminum over nylon for anyone our size as it is more durable and less likely to break. The aluminum, at least the more affordable aluminum, will be a lot heavier but shouldn't be a problem if your not under 150 lbs. If you're down with that www.rollergirl.ca has a decently priced pairs: http://www.rollergirl.ca/skateshop/rebel-super-p-300.htmlhttp://www.rollergirl.ca/skateshop/rebel-competitor-p-379.htmlhttp://www.rollergirl.ca/skateshop/fresh-meat-package-rebel-competitor-p-312.html I know that many HRDA skaters have used this site so it's a pretty safe bet. To get a lighter aluminum you've got to spend a bit more cash, $200+ for the plates alone from what I've found. What I chose to do was to get a quality boot (leather is better than synthetic) and start with the nylon plates to stay within my initial budget. I wanted to buy Canadian made and went for Dominions (you can order these through Sportwheels in Lower Sackville). I figured that for the initial learning curve, and according to the info out there, it would be fine to start with and I could invest and upgrade later. Wheels are also something to consider, I found this great resource for choosing the right wheel by surface and by skater weight: http://wftda.com/sponsors/atom-wheels Hope this helps!
Skates
Hi! I'm really interested in joining. I'd be a super beginner...I've inline skated but never on actual roller skates. Can anyone recommend a good place to get a pair?

I ordered mine from www.rollergirl.ca and the girls have listed other sites on here, too, but I can't remember them all. I like that rollergirl has the fresh meat package so that you don't have to order everything separate.
