In November of 2015 we were extremely excited as we had just purchased a health insurance policy specifically for our daughter to receive ABA Therapy. Our primary policy did not cover this much needed service. We trusted and believed that Positive Behavior Support here in Fort Worth, Texas would provide quality ABA therapy and have my daughters best interest at heart. Unfortunately we were wrong. We began contact with PBS prior to 2016 and immediately once the policy took effect in 2016. However, our daughter did not receive an evaluation or services until mid February. Once evaluated she qualified for 10 hrs a week of direct behavior assistants. Her first behavior assistant often missed days or would show up noticeably effected by problems in her personal life. In early June she gave us a short notice that she would be leaving the state because of these personal reasons. Our daughter was then handed off to the second assistant who could only provide 7 hrs per week. Our first BCBA ensured us that the remaining hours would be provided and she would arrange another assistant to meet us as soon as possible. In mid July the third assistant was arranged to provided therapy for the remaining three hours. The first scheduled date she was a no-show. The next scheduled date she arrived late by way of Uber. There was no third appointment as she notified us that getting to our house was not worth the money. Our daughter not receiving the much needed hours of therapy became extremely frustrating. In August we finally received the fourth assistant, who split the 10 hours with the second. For a few weeks things began to come together. But of course the only consist we have found with PBS is inconsistency. Once the local school year began in late August the second assistant advised us that she would be unable to fit our daughters hours into her schedule. Again we were down to one assistant who could only satisfy 6 hrs per week. Once we lost the last assistant we also realized that the program provided and the effort of our BCBA was not adequate. We contacted the PBS Regional BCBA Coordinator who then assigned us a new BCBA. In late September a fifth assistant was able to provide the remaining 4 weekly hours of therapy. But once again the inconsistency began shortly after. Assistant four who provided 2 hrs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays began to miss days weekly during October. On Monday October 24th she again canceled and we asked her directly if she is committed to providing therapy for our daughter or was she searching for another job. She stated that she was committed and was not actively looking for other employment. On October 26th she advised us that she was leaving PBS for another job. This was the last straw for us. We immediately discontinued service with PBS. Raising a child with Autism is extremely challenging. As parents we search for the best to provide services to help our children obtain the tools to be successful. Purchasing a separate policy, paying out the monthly premium and deductible are only added stresses. Especially when the results are those of which we have received. Needless to say our experience with PBS has not been positive for us and most importantly not for our daughter. We wish this was an email of appreciation and we were providing reviews of positivity. Instead we must notify others who may be looking towards PBS of our negative experiences. It appears that PBS is failing from the top down. These behavior assistance have lead us to believe that the support they receive is insufficient, BCBA's are unorganized and unattached, and pay and benefits are not comparable. Combined with behavior assistance who are entry level with little to no experience does not provide the tools needed to improve behavior, quality of life, or empower caregivers support for success and self-sufficiency.
