If you're interested, send me a message. David's right it is very addictive. You've been warned :)Loy W. replied:2.5 acres is plenty of room as I have a hive at my house on a small 1/3 acre. As you get to know more about bees they will build a hive behind a crack or small hole anywhere (tree, building, meter box, Bar-B-Que, so anywhere is anywhere). Beesource.com Forum (Michael Bush again) really likes new people and it doesn't cost anything to join. Plans and all kinds of discussion. There is also a place to order called Mann Lake Bee Keeping You can order a catalog (no charge) from any of them. It gives you an idea of what cost are but if you are (or know someone) handy with a saw the plans spoken about above can be made. Initial expense will be signifigant but you would do well to find a mentor somewhere close to you. Or at least someone on a phone. There is also a series of videos from several sources that show anything from basics to indepth discussions. One in particular that I like is either "fat bee man and the new fat bee man" He attemps to show easy 1 to 3 minute videos that will help. A mentor is huge. I still have one. Now we bounce ideas off each other but I listen to everyone. I have been stung by one and then I have been stung by at least 20 bees. One did not bother me but the 20.... well my hands swelled up pretty bad. An epi pen protects your airway if needed; if you never need it; AWESOME One thing you need to know. We are allowed by bees to manipulate them. Once you get to know them you understand how little we really get them to do. We just attempt to give them a hospitable habitat with everything they need and hope they like it and stay put. We call ourselves beekeepers and we believe we use the bees for our benefit but I'm pretty sure they are using us. WELCOME TO BEEKEEPING

I am assuming that whatever will get rid of the ants will seep out and affect the flowers and plants in the yard. Or is exterminating for ants safe for bees? Any recommended bee friendly exterminators? Thanks!
James R. replied:While reading discussions on Beesource.com, I get the impression that most folks are trying to protect their hives from ants and there are a number of ways to do that. Your situation is different in that you want to get rid of an ant problem in the house, but don't want to jeopardize your bees in the process. I think that most, if not all, ant treatments end up in the ant nest. They do not "leak" into the soil and get taken up by surrounding plants and become available to the bees. Pesticides like AMDRO sells are broken down by sunlight, anyway. I suggest contacting an exterminator, ask what they use, then Google it to find out about it. If they treat inside the house, I suspect you will be okay.

Reading the link you provided you get the impression he barely used it. I wonder how someone who has as many hives as he's had over the years has time to crush and strain. I'd also remind people Michael Bush lives in an area in Nebraska that has at least double the honey production per hive that we have here in MA. Damaging wax with crush and strain methods there has much less impact on the next harvest than it would around here. Beekeeping is local. Reading the section on the link you provided labeled "Richard Taylor on Comb Honey" I have to respectfully disagree. It's the opinion of only one beekeeper and although it's his right to have that opinion there's a reason why he's not posting it on the forum Bee- L.....they'd eat him alive. I didn't see anything in his first paragraph that I thought was even mildly true with us using an extractor. I think I'd quit beekeeping altogether if is was. All our extracting tools including our buckets fit into either our extracting tank or the extractor itself. It takes up a tiny corner in our basement during the off season. When you do crush and strain you still have to store your empty supers which takes up the same amount of space as our full ones do. Because we spray our brood frames with Xentari wax damage from moths is eliminated and we have mouse traps on the floor to keep mice at bay. I certainly don't have a problem with anyone who wants to crush and strain and if I lived off the grid I'd do it myself. For me though the resulting extra work for the bees later isn't worth it.
