I contacted Focus-MD in Raleigh after seeing them listed in Additude Magazine as a top rated ADHD Treatment Center in the country. I was very impressed with the story of their origins and their stated philosophy on their national website. Imagine my shock and disbelief when their admin informed me that the Drs (who refused to speak to me personally) were refusing to even evaluate, much less treat, my daughter because she cut herself a year ago. They got that info from the forms we were required to complete before they would even make an appointment. Now I see why they have that requirement. I suspect it's so they don't have to waste the time or money involved with establishing a patient who MAY be difficult to treat. It's easier to just cherry-pick the easy patients who will maintain their artificially inflated success rate. . This may sound harsh or like I'm jumping to conclusions. But what conclusion am I supposed to come to when the Drs show not even the basest empathy for my daughter's struggles. They refused to discuss it with me or to speak to me AT ALL, passing all their responses to my pleadings through their secretary. They based this callous and uncaring decision on a few words in a form and made it VERY clear they weren't interested in details to provide context or history to the story. What else am I supposed to assume when they are doing the very thing that drove their founder to start Focus-MD (http://www.focus-md.com/the-history-of-focus/). Or when it seems they're acting in direct contradiction to the advice from their own company blog (http://www.focus-md.com/physicians-pay-attention-adhd-2/). Or, worse yet, in direct contradiction to the company philosophy they are supposedly founded on. (Below from http://www.focus-md.com/how-does-focus-md-work/ and http://www.focus-md.com/the-focus-philosophy-start-here/): "We listen to the parents of our pediatric patients. . . .Enough one-on-one time with your doctor is the cornerstone of the Focus-MD experience." ". . . our compassion, respect for your concerns and experience ensure that the patient and his/her family are treated thoughtfully." "If the diagnosis isn't clear, or the symptoms are due to another condition, we'll help find the resources you need. . . . ADHD patients share a number of characteristics, but no two are alike. We are committed to the whole person. . . . Improving the lives of patients with ADHD is our passion." . Every one of these tenets was ignored in my daughter's case. What other conclusion can I come to except they're only concerned with the money and/or maintaining their artificial success rate. . I had talked to my daughter about the great hope I had for this place based on their reputation. How do you think she felt when I had to tell her they wouldn't see her. I made up a lie but she's not stupid. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. . I must finish by stating that this review only applies to the Raleigh, NC location of Focus-MD. I have no experience with any other branch or the Home Office. I pray, for the sake of other parents, adults, and children desperate for help that this is isolated to the Raleigh branch.
