  3 recommendations. Bike shop: Bicycle Habitat on Lafayette St. Bicycle: I recommend a "hybrid", a cross between a road and a mountain bike, good for potholed NYC streets. A good choice is the Trek 7.3 fx, about $650 at Habitat, also comes in a women' s version. Don't get a used bike unless you're knowledgeable. Learning riding skills: NYCC C-SIG. This year's course has already started but be sure to sign up for next year's.
