(originally from NYC). Very excited! I could REALLY use your help and advice: where in Evanston do you recommend I look for a place to live that would be near good preschools and activities for toddlers? Can you recommend some great preschools? (Looking to start my son in preschool next fall.) Full day option/flexible schedule, low teacher:student ratio, play-based, diversity, could feed into public school, not religiously affiliated? And perhaps some good in-home or other daycare for a few months before he starts preschool? Great areas for a single mama with a very active toddler? Apartment rental sites?   Hi Allegra - one site I highly recommend is the Neighborhood Parents Network which is a great resource for Chicagoland parents on just about every topic. The website is: http://www.npnparents.org/. YMCA has a very well-respected pre-school as does Cherry Pre-School which both I believe have part and full-day options. Best of luck to you!

  In addition to a nanny placement service, look on npnparents.org. There are so many parents looking to find a new placement for their current/previous nanny. Also, believe it or not, I've had good luck on Craigslist. You can post an ad for free. I've had less luck on Sittercity.com. Doing it on your own takes more time than working with a placement service but it'll save you a few thousand dollars if it works out in the long run (and you're able to expand your pool of applicants by so many).
