About us

Off on the Right Paw dog training services include Clicker Foundations/Manners for adolescent and adult dogs (5 months of age and up), as well as Puppy Start Right (PSR) Pre-School for pups of 7-12 weeks of age. For pups in between the two age classes (3 to 5 months of age) or those in need of more impulse control work, PSR Kindergarten class is also available.

At present, in house classes are small (3 dogs per class, or 3-4 pups per class).Upon availability of a larger training space (we are looking!) class size will double (6 dogs or 6 puppies). More on this will be posted to the page in 2015 once a suitable space is found.

Clicker training is an effective and force-free method to train all animals (not just dogs). Based in the science of learning theory, clicker training is the real-world application of classical conditioning and operant conditioning in combination with positive reinforcement. In a nutshell, if you wish you could just take a photo of your dog when he does something you like, develop it on the spot, show the photo to your dog, and say, “If you do this again, I’ll make it worth your while”, and so he does, then this method is for owners like you. Profound bonds form between handler and animal as they connect as a team, and build the communication they will need for a lifetime of fun and learning together.

TRAINING SERVICES OVERVIEW:

The ORP Clicker Foundations/Manners course is based on the well-formulated Beginner’s Curriculum the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior(www.karenpryoracademy.com), shared exclusively with graduates of their flagship Dog Trainer Professional Program. Although the basic manners (i.e., sit, down, recall, stay, impulse control, and polite walking) taught in traditional training classes are learned, the primary aim, and extra benefit of, ORP's foundations course is to teach owners and dogs the skills they can use and build upon for a lifetime of new behaviors.

course, Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP), Pamela Bromberg offers a fun, convenient and flexible, rotating module class curriculum. Dog owners can enrol in the full curriculum and complete it in as little as 3 weeks, or take their time learning their new skills over 3 months. There is ample personal attention from the trainer as in house classes consist of only a maximum of 3 dogs/class, and extra consideration has gone into ensuring dogs have maximum personal space for an effective and positive training experience. After the Orientation (without dogs), clients are welcome to choose to do any of the five modular training classes in the rotating schedule, in any order, and modules are offered twice weekly to suit a variety of personal schedules. Two optional 1 hour "fun hikes" are also included in the full course for loose leash walking practice in "real-life". Moreover, as a special promotion for dog enthusiasts, owners can repeat modules within this 3 month period for a drop-in fee that is 50% lower than the regular cost of a single class. This gives owners extra time to learn the behaviors with the trainer present as well as behaviors beyond the basics). Alternatively, clients can opt to try a module at a time as a “short course” introduction to the clicker training approach.

The ORP Puppy Start Right (PSR) Pre-School is based on the proven effective curriculum developed by Debbie Martin and Dr. Ken Martin. This curriculum is shared only with Graduates of KPA's Puppy Start Right for Instructor's course. PSR focuses not only on getting manners started (i.e., sit, down, recall, stay, impulse control, and loose-leash walking), but also serves as a vaccination against behavioral problems in the future (i.e., fear, aggression). In PSR puppy parents learn how to use positive and proactive exploration to build their puppy's confidence and increase comfort when around novelty (new objects, people, and situations) that might otherwise be a concern to a pup (concerns unaddressed can turn into fears in the future). For older puppies new to training (> 3 months of age to 5 months of age), PSR Kindergarten is available. The curriculum in PSR Kindergarten is similar to PSR Pre-School, however there is more emphasis on teaching impulse control to energetic pre-teens!

In ORP's Puppy Start Right Pre-school, after the Orientation class (without pups) there are 4 training classes; the first module is set as it covers elimination training (learning to go potty outside is very important!), but thereafter classes are modular. Thus, owners may choose either to do classes in a linear fashion, or if they can't make a class and must skip a week or two, they can pick up where they left off. The only limitation is that their pup should not time out of puppy class (they cannot be older than 16 weeks of age at graduation). Older puppies (between 3-5 months of age) can still benefit from the PSR curriculum before proceeding to the Clicker Foundations course. Owners of older puppies may contact the trainer about PSR Kindergarten classes OR the trainer may decide regular PSR class is suitable, but the older puppy will have other entertaining things to do during puppy play-time periods. Pending on demand, PSR modules may be offered twice or more weekly. In addition, two 1 hour field trips (one outdoors, one indoors) are included in the PSR courses for "real-life" positive and proactive exposure/acclimation to novel situations.

Private training is also available for addressing common behavioral issues that concern pet owners using the clicker approach
