Why donate

Hair is the crowning glory of any women. It defines her personality ,accentuates her beauty and a simple change in hair style could make a star transform from a maid to a siren. So losing hair is something unimaginable for any women. And to see it fall in lumps helplessly during chemo is perhaps more painful than the... show more
chemo. It becomes difficult to look in the mirror as your reflection becomes your worst enemy. A bald head without eye brows and lashes depresses the patient more than anything else. So a wig with natural hair is perhaps the most precious gift for any chemo patient. It restores their dignity and self esteem. It enables them to face the world again perhaps looking even prettier than before, since a gorgeous wig could even transform their looks.
But a wig with natural hair is very expensive. So it is criminal to throw away hair when people go for summer cuts. Not knowing that the hair which is wasted could actually bring a smile to a chemo patient

The inspiration
It took an 8 year old Boy, called Dylan,to change all this. Seeing his neighbor’s daughter donate her long beautiful locks for a wig, 6 year old Dylan decided that he too should do something. Braving bullies and snide remarks Dylan grew his hair for 4 years to donate. It takes more time for boys to grow their hair. Dylan finally donated 16” in October 2013.
A chance meeting with Dylan in 2011 inspired Protect your mom campaign to start hair donations in Dubai.

How you can help

Every reader could play a part in this by educating the parlors how to cut hair. Hair should be shampooed and dried without chemicals. Dyed hair cannot be used. We require a minimum of 15 inches .Make a ponytail of 15 inches or more with a rubber band. . (The shortest hair could be 15” long). It is better to place another rubber band at 16”. Cut between the two rubber bands. Place in a zip lock bag and contact us at pym20101@hotmail.com. We need 15 inches to make wigs for women. It is better to read the full instructions before cutting under notes on hair for hope India page on facebook.
So next time you visit the parlor do give them a print out of the instructions!

What happens to the hair

We do not collect hair and have not authorised anyone to collect hair.
Schools/colleges could organise mass donations and pay and convert hair into wigs and donate the same to the Regional cancer centres/cancer ward .You need a minimum of Approx 250-300 gms of 15" long hair. Contact us at pym20101@hotmail.com if you need a sponsor. We do have a sponsor who will pay for the wigs. You could get companies to sponsor the event and pay the wig maker. We could give you complete guidance and assistance free of cost.

Please contact us before you decide to organise an event in your college/school and we could connect you with media, oncologists, cancer patients, alopecia patients, NGOs and wig makers . pym20101@hotmail.com. All ideas are welcome since this is a maiden venture to ensure that hair does not end up in the bin.

Please don't forget to send us the pictures to inspire others!

Please follow these instructions
https://www.facebook.com/notes/protect-your-mom-campaign/hair-donation-instructions/590276677669584.

www.glamsalonandspa.in, at Vyttila, Kochi, Acua salon, Kottayam, and Sin O Hair, Mumbai ,India have agreed to give free haircuts to anyone who would like to donate hair

We would like to invite more salons to learn the correct method of cutting and storing the hair so that hair does not go into the bin.At the moment the focus is to ensure that hair doesn't go into the bin rather than donating hair.

Activities by our fans
We thank our fans Lijiya, Abu Dhabi for training Caramel Beauty Parlor in Abu Dhabi how to cut the hair and also creating awareness in Cambridge High School, Abu Dhabi. We need more people to train parlors the right way of cutting so that hair does not end up in the bin. Simran another student has already trained 2 other salons in Dubai.

Contact
Anyone could contact us through protect your mom page and get the correct instructions to donate hair or through pym20101@hotmail.com. You can donate from anywhere in the world. If youfollow instructions hair can be stored for years until you can give it us. Contact us for wigs too providing details about financial status and status as a chemo patient.
