  We are planning to attend the NFB convention this year, but I waited until I knew we were going to be able to go before I reserved a room. I had no idea the rooms would be gone so quickly. The overflow hotel is also booked up. Anyone have any suggestions of hotels they are staying at this year or have had to stay at in the past because of this?

  Dear Colleagues, We have some information with regards to some non-Rosen properties in Orlando. Please share this with your affiliates. We’ve arranged for an NFB hotel block at the Doubletree by Hilton Orlando at Seaworld! The Doubletree is less than a mile from the Rosen Centre and has amenities such as flat-screen televisions and microwaves in the rooms, a swimming pool, and several on-property restaurants. To make a reservation, call 800-327-0363 and ask for group code NFB. Depending on your schedule, room rates will be more expensive on certain days. Rates are $89 for the nights of July 7-9. Rates are $159/night for July 3-6 and $179/night for July 10-11. Additional rooms may be found at a less expensive rate at the Clarion or the Red Roof Inn, although the details won’t be finalized in their reservation system until late on Thursday, May 28. You may call to book a room at the Clarion (800-826-4847) with a king or two queen beds for $110/night. We also have a block of rooms at the Red Roof Inn (407-352-1507 option 4) with a king or two full beds at the rate of $99/night. Both the Clarion and the Red Roof Inn offer a swimming pool, free Wi-Fi, and a microwave. (Some rooms may have a refrigerator.) Both properties are a short walk from the Rosen Centre entrance.   Is there some magic trick to getting services you need for your child? I have been waiting for weeks, I've been blown off by early steps. my baby is blind is one years old and cannot do anything really without my help. He doesn't do any of the things that other one year olds are supposed to, I keep reading this book division of blind services gave me and it keeps reitterating how important it is for early intervention AND that a blind child still needs to be held to mile stones. The only therapist who works with DBS in my area will not call me back no matter how many organizations tell her too and she seems to be linked with ALL of them. No one will help me!! how can I find an occupational therapist without going through the state? the state and DBS won't help me so I need help finding a therapist in Lee county Florida. Also if anyone has information on how to receive services we should already be getting that would be very helpful. I've been on the phone all mourning and I keep getting answering services and machines. I was granted a rare day off from work due to a power outtage and figured I might be able to help my son find help but am getting no where. I know nothing about blindness other than what I've read so far in this book..I've never so much as met someone who is blind.....-frusterated, tired and angry in florida ~ nicole

  Hi Nicole Clifford, I am in SC and my children were not born blind, so I have not experienced exactly what you are going through. I know that there are parents on this page who have children with congenital blindness and they have been successful in helping their children to stay developmentally on track. I expect that one of them will answer you soon. Your frustration is loud and clear and I just wanted you to know that someone is heairng you. In the meanwhile, contact the NFB in Baltimore.   Is there an National Federation of the Blind Chapter in your area? If you contact them, I bet they may know who to put you in touch with.

  There is no excuse for a baby or a mother to have to wait, but it is the reality most of us are living with which is why we have the NOPBC. Some areas and states do a better job than others, but all of us in the NOPBC have fought for something for our kids. Since it has not been said, the NOPBC is a part of the National Federation of the Blind. You mentioned that you do not know any blind people. That is a good thing to think about. Making Florida do its job is harder than you finding a blind person to bring into your baby's life. By calling on NFB in your state or at the national level you can begin to provide your baby with what is needed. Sometimes (lots of times) we lean on each other when the services are not provided. There are sighted parents and blind parents in this organization who are raising blind and sighted children. So in the meanwhile ask the parents of blind babies how they got their babies to meet milestones.
