Having had the misfortune of utilising this service, I felt compelled to issue a warning to other potential clients considering carpentry works of any kind. Recently, we had cause to have skirting boards replaced in a bedroom due to termite damage. Further to that, the internal wooden house frame was severely damaged where the wood touched the concrete floor, and to a minor extent tunnelling had also occurred in the gyprock wall.
Thus quotes were obtained and we settled on this service because the price was good and the person sounded as if they had a good grasp of what was required. The first mistake, so I've discovered, is in agreeing to cash-in-hand transactions with tradesmen. This leaves you wide open to substandard work with no paper trail as "come-back" once the job is done. I was out of town when the job was done so wasn't present to inspect it when it came time for payment.
Not only did the board not match the original skirting, lengths were cut piecemeal and butted up to each other to make the desired length. Where they 'joined' they didn't align. No attempt was made to replace the wooden beam in the wall cavity and so there was nothing except a narrow strip of gyprock to which the skirting board was attached. The result was a very flimsy structure which will do nothing to prevent the ingress of pests. Carpet was then laid in the room and that tradesmen made comment as to how insufficient and poor a job it was. Instead of angle cutting and joining old to new skirting board in the corners, jagged cuts were made in the new and the piece simply butted up "flat" against the existing pieces. Additionally, another piece of board was required under the window frame. This was attached as was, no sanding was done along the existing surface to smooth out any damage, so a large gap remains between the wall and board. Though I phoned and complained and was assured that Ken would come out. He never showed.
Julie Suess has asked if anyone can recommend a builder/handyman in the Ipswich area. Can we help her out folks, anyone have any recommendations?

We used Ken the carpenter just before Christmas for a small job and he was very good and well priced. Attention to detail was something i noticed. Ken Harders 0412 748 418
