Current UK guidelines don't describe any situations in which women should be offered testing - see http://www.gbss.org.uk/Pregnant for a summary of what they do say. Hope that helps :)

  Hi Annette - check out http://www.gbss.org.uk/test for the places which offer the ECM (Enriched Culture Medium) test for group B Strep, both on the NHS and privately. The ECM test result is hugely predictive of group B Strep carriage status for 5 weeks, so it's normally suggested at 35-37 weeks of pregnancy. That way, it's both predictive and gives time to get the results back before your little one shows up :)

I have educated my pregnant work colleague & she has applied for a kit, she doesn't feel very comfortable doing the test herself so wanted to know if anyone on here/if you know of any clinics she could go to?? I'm sorry to say that shes nearly 8 months pregnant & again (like me) she wasn't educated/informed about GBS!!! is it best for her to take the kit to her local GP/Midwife & get them to swab her?? what do you think??   Hi Yvonne - the places (NHS and private) which offer the sensitive test are listed at http://www.gbss.org.uk/test - the NHS trusts first, then the postal private services, then the clinics. I'm afraid there isn't one in Berkshire, but research has shown that self-taken swabs following instructions are just as reliable as those where a health professional takes the swabs. Yes, she could ask her GP/Midwife to take the swabs for her, though we don't believe they're not obliged to do that for a private test. Do let us know how she gets on!

  Hi Laura - The UK guidance is, if a mum has previously had a baby who developed GBS infection, that mum should be offered intravenous antibiotics in all future labours. See http://www.gbss.org.uk/Pregnant for the latest guidelines. If your friend wants to be tested anyway, then the places which offer the 'gold standard' ECM test for GBS carriage are listed at http://www.gbss.org.uk/test. Hope that helps

I am 30 weeks and my son had this infection (I wasn't tested and they don't know how he contracted it). We nearly lost him to Meningitis/Sepsis but luckily he's fine :-) My consultant has said I will automatically be given antibiotics in labour.

  Hi Christine - So sorry to hear your son was so poorly, and fab he's fine. As he was diagnosed with GBS infection, you don't need to be tested for GBS carriage - you should be offered antibiotics in labour anyway. Having said that, if you want to avoid the abx in labour, then a negative sensitive test within 6 weeks of delivery would make that very possible.
