About us

Ellesmere folk law contains the story of Maddy Kickstone, a local woman jilted by her husband on her wedding night who, to add insult to injury, stole her wedding ring for good measure. Naturally traumatised by this callous betrayal, and believing her ring lost rather than stolen, Maddy spent her remaining days kicking over stones hoping to find these tokens of her lost love. Sadly these actions caused her to find herself walking through Cremorne Gardens and straying out onto the frozen mere where the ice gave way and she slipped under the icy waters to her death.

Tragic, yes, but when a then unnamed local band were offered the chance to play the Queens Jubilee celebrations at the very same location, they set upon this story as a fitting moniker and so “The Kickstones” journey began.

Roll on a few years and this four piece Indie/alternative rock band have gone from strength to strength. Chalking up plaudits from commentators such Aziz Ibrahim (The Stone Roses), Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets) and BBC Introducing this is a band who know their stuff.

Fronted by Matt Smith (lead guitarist and vocals), the remainder of the regular Kickstones sound is provided by Chris Thirlwall (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), Jason Page (bass guitar) and Jordan Drayton (drums). Friend of the band, and ex-Twang drummer, Matty Clinton, is also an occasional guest addition to the line-up.

With their debut EP due for release soon, this band love playing live and love playing loud. Guaranteed to become bigger than the legend of Maddy Kickstone check them out before everyone else jumps on their band wagon.
