Moving to the borough and have 2 dachshunds who need some training when they encounter/see other dogs while on a leash, any recommendations for a local dog trainer?

Find your Force Free educated trainer here-- this is an UNREGULATED business. Ask what tools trainers use and their methods and why they're qualified. Consumer beware. www.petprofessionalguild.com/Zip-Code-Search
Further anyone who uses aversive tools wouldn't be an educated trainer. Any and all behaviorist (with a ph.d.) universally agree, force free is the way to go.https://www.sfspca.org/prong
Our dog keeps eating garbage when we let her run, play ball with her, etc. We desperately need a dog trainer. Any recommendations?

While you will receive A LOT of suggestions, I am sorry to inform you that dog training is unregulated as a business. There are 3 camps of trainers out there, (dominance, balance and force-free) only 1 is supported by scientific evidence with a focus on positive reinforcement and which never uses aversive tools ie. Shock, prong, vibrate, startle, alpha roll, dominance etc. ; the only way to ensure you've had a chance to speak with a qualified, educated, progressive professional is to search a few sites. Here is the Pet Professional Guild Website: https://petprofessionalguild.com/Zip-Code-Search

Dog training is a completely unregulated business, this means anyone can set up shop and call themselves qualified, unfortunately this is not the case. This is an excellent, short article that explains the business further. To find somebody who is Force free, fear-free, pain-free, does not use aversive tools, like a prong collar or shock collar, in an effort to get compliance rather than actually changing Behavior, you can utilize the pet professional Guild website. http://www.ispeakdog.org/how-to-choose-a-dog-trainer.html

The OP asked about a "Veterinary Behaviorist", which is a person with a medical degree and an additional board certification. (A trainer, no matter how good, is falsifying his or her credentials if s/he claims to be a "behaviorist" and doesn't have a degree in it.) The veterinary department of the University of Pennsylvania has a behavior department; you could also contact Dr. Reisner & see if she does your area or can recommend someone http://www.reisnervetbehavior.com/

Jennifer S. replied:
This works great for any unwanted behavior. You spray it in front of them when they are barking and say "no bark." You may only need to do it once or twice then leave the orange can out where they can see it, porch or step when they are outside or carry it in your hand when they are out. Trust me this orange can will be your new best friend. I used it for a very destructive lab and he was a changed dog. Only use it for one behavior at a time until that is corrected then you can use for others. The owner/manager at Pet Kraze in chadds ford told me about it when I asked about a trainer, I was in tears this dog was so bad. You can go in and talk to her, she's great. Pet smart also carries it. Good luck!
