Check rental prices at CarRentals.com. We rented from Economy 5-6 times at decent prices and without problems (even though some say to avoid them). As with most car rental agencies in CR, advertised prices do not include CR mandatory liability insurance which will add $15-$20 to the daily rate. For lodging, Casa Aura in Tamarindo may be worth a look. They refer to it as an "upscale hostel". Although they have a dorm room, they also have a few private rooms. It is on the beach and breakfast is included. It is farily new and we haven't stayed there, but they seem to get good reviews on Trip Advisor.
