Bella Napoli in Bloomfield is a good place for a family dinner. The food is very good. I also recently went to Fresco on Church Street in Montclair and the food there was excellent but it's on Church so the parking is sketchy when it's busy.

Matthews in Clifton. Small call for reservations but one of the best gourmet. Or Bella Napoli also in Clifton more family style Italian cuisine. Meal in Nutley modern Italian. Or the ultimate Barelis in secaucus 10 min away. If you like sopranos style dinning. All great.

A little further, but Bella Gente in Verona on Bloomfield ave. I had my sons christening dinner there. there is a bunch of parking in the back. It was byob, they set up a cute cake and wine table. I had a large party so I was able to do $20 a person but it did not appear that way to guests. They have a ton of options. I was very happy with the day. http://www.bellagentenj.com
