Seamstress referrals in Burbank, CA from Feb 26, 2014
Kota W. asked:
seamstress/designer friends...
what sewing machine would you recommend for a beginner? ^_^
i don't need a big industrial machine, just to do little things like upcycling and little projects!
any suggestions? :3
Elizabeth Y. answered:
Yeah, gotta agree that Singer isn't what it used to be. Those metal ones from the 1970 s are good, my mom had one and it held up for decades. And I guess Janome isn't as good as people say, I believe they're the ones who made the Hello Kitty machines!
Roberta I. answered:
I still have the elna my mom gave me when I graduated from high school. It is metal, not plastic, and heavy. Still works great. Basic stitches, and a few fancy ones. It is yours if you want it. I can bring it to you in April.
Elizabeth Y. answered:
Is price an issue? Kenmore is good for the price (you can get 'em at Sears). Babylock makes great machines with more stitch functions, but expect to pay a little more. I hear Janome is good, but I don't have any experience with them. Hope that helps!
Bryan K. answered:
My girlfriends mom makes Tahitian dance costumes which is heavy duty material and extremely accurate stitching she uses a Husqvarna and she's a very thrifty shopper so I doubt it would break the bank. But what do I know
Jessica N. answered:
Singer is good to start. I was told that if you go to a sewing shop, that you can get brand new machines super cheap two ways. One if it was used to demo at a sewing show. Two if it has been repaired by the manufacturer. Ask about it. My mother In law got top of the line brand new for half price because it was used to demo in a show so it was out if box.
Kristen C. answered:
Brother is my favorite brand! Lots of different price points and I've never had an issue with any of mine. Two pieces of advice: - Stay away from White brand machines. They're garbage. - regardless of brand, do not buy a machine that is less than $150 for it's regular price ( if it's on sale for less then that's fine). Super cheap machines... well, you get what you pay for. Hope you find that useful
Jessica N. answered:
I learned on a brother it's good to start.
Kota W. answered:
Kristen Carr yeah I've learned that the hard way! I bought a Hello Kitty machine from Target for about $150 and it breaks every ten minutes.
Vanessa W. answered:
I got my first (and the machine I still use today) machine from Costco, it's a Brother. I think it's finally time for an upgrade, but it's been AMAZING considering how long I've had it, how much I've used it, and how inexpensive it was! I think it was just under $200!
Ana P. answered:
do not get singer... i bought a $200 one and it messes up everytime
Michelle M. answered:
The cheap one lol. I started with one of those $8 handheld machines and mind you it broke within months but it did it's job until then. After that I got a Brother - the cheapest machine I could find at Walmart. It carried me for over a year. It wasn't perfect but it did what I needed it to do until I'd learned enough and was using it often enough to warrant investing in a higher quality machine.
Bebe L. answered:
I used a Husqvarna in fashion design class in high school! When i got my own sewing machine, it was a Brother brand from Costco! It hasn't failed me yet! Both are good beginner machines
Cassie M. answered:
I have a Singers and my coverstitch and overlock are both Brothers I love them both. If you want to come over and play with my machines ever, feel free
Kelsey K. answered:
I love my Husqvarna Viking (Emerald 116). It's been put through a lot and still runs beautifully.
Lauren B. answered:
I love my Husqvarna machines so much I have 5 of them. They have really great foot/attachment options for when you get more advanced, but they're sturdy and don't require too much upkeep.
Kota W. answered:
wow thank you everyone for all your help! and Roberta Day Idzorek, that would be amazing! i'd love to take it off your hands for you! my Hello Kitty machine can only handle so much lol!
Cassie M. answered:
Kota Kitty Wade we can get some hello kitty stickers to make the new machine feel like home
Roberta I. answered:
The one condition, if you don't like it, just give it back to me, there's another 7 grandkids down the line
Roberta I. answered:
I like Cassie Wanda Marshall Mich's idea, it could use some bling:-!
