Tyres referrals in Farnborough, United Kingdom from Oct 05, 2014
Vince W. asked:
Can anyone recommend any good ways to lessen scraping and Tarmac whacking?
I know my Beetle isn't even the lowest thing around so there must be answers! It has a 2" narrowed beam, drop spindles, lowered beam (on max), shorter gas shocks, tiny 125 tyres.
Any advice gladly received as I'm developing a fear of pot holes and small dips!
Jake T. answered:
Best thing to do is just drive around potholes, dips, and speed bumps. Thats what i have to do. My friend actually has a sticker that says, "not drunk just avoiding potholes"
Mark P. answered:
I can get a finger under mine and l am going to higher it up over the winter!! I need a new spine everytime I get out!!
Vince W. answered:
Rhys, do you know a good product?
Rhys M. answered:
I used a bugpeople one but any metal shop can bend and drill a peice of 8 mm steel for ya
Sam J. answered:
No problem
Rhys M. answered:
This one
Vince W. answered:
Cheers people!
Ben T. answered:
Tyre profile maybe a little bigger
Nick G. answered:
A bit of 2" angle iron does the trick
Alex C. answered:
How good are them skid plates from the bug people Rhys
Declan S. answered:
Shit, I have 2" AtomWerk spring plates and 2" drop spindles for this, hope I'm not gonna have same problem, thought 2" was fairly modest!
Butch H. answered:
If you get stuck i can make one up for you vince
Jonathan S. answered:
the air ride in front helps..im lowered two clicks in back too,,i made bump stops outa boot heels
Mark W. answered:
Raise it up
Ruski R. answered:
Lawnmower!
Vince W. answered:
I like the stance so I don't really want to raise it, change tyres. Sounds like I might have to live with it. I don't mind scrapes so much it's the mega whacks that do me in.
Simon M. answered:
Stiffer shocks to minimise bounce and dipping when braking, bigger brakes to stop before you hit pot holes, learn the best route. But above all else! Do not raise it!
Butch H. answered:
Add skid plates then you would look super cool at night with all those sparks
Vince W. answered:
Oh I drive slowly Ruski...always slow!

Rhys M. answered:
Yeah mine.used to smash the ground till I got a skidplate still does hit but slides over it now lol
Sam J. answered:
Front for £599 Front and rear £799
Vince W. answered:
Cheers Sam - I'm fairly tied up for cash until after Slough Swapmeet, will look at it more then
Vince W. answered:
Declan, I've got the adjusters as well as the drop spindles - the plus point with the spindles is it does seem to keep the geometry sensible still.
Butch H. answered:
Skid plates
Vince W. answered:
Yeah, I'm thinking some sort of skid plate. Just want to take the edge off those bad Tarmac breaking moments!
Steven R. answered:
Loads of little mods to give you a bit more clearance but if it dont scrape it aynt low enough
Nick G. answered:
Stop worrying and embrace it
Michael C. answered:
Get air or hydraulics
Adrian H. answered:
Ditch the dropped spindles which may give you 1/2" extra tuck each side then adjust ride height to where you want it
Ruski R. answered:
IDrive slowly!
Darren P. answered:
Front air would realise all issues. Just a push on a button to lift slightly when required
Chris J. answered:
I am pretty sure I gonna scrape/ bottom out
Declan S. answered:
My old bug wasn't too bad generally. It was down one spline at rear and had adjustable beam at front so car sat level. 1 spline is apparently 2" so was hoping the 2" spring plates and 2" drop spindles on standard beam would give me similar height whilst help retaining some ride quality!
Peter-James M. answered:
slightly bigger tyre profile and raise it up?
Ruski R. answered:
Put it back to standard height!, as nature intended
Rob H. answered:
nice
Horst S. answered:
Baja it
Vince W. answered:
Might be an answer, slightly worried about it hitting the arches as it steers - slightly tucked.
Stephen K. answered:
Lower it more.
Vince W. answered:
Ruskin, you sound like my dad. I'm 36 and hid the fact I had it lowered for nearly 6 months!
Clive R. answered:
Deff get skid plates and hurleys hotrods the man to see about them
Vince W. answered:
Mines a spline at the back, just filled the aches back up with 205 s
Nick G. answered:
I'm on air at the front
Vince W. answered:
That does sound like the long term plan, motor ways, main roads are fine - it's the state of local roads - it's giving me Tourette's!
