Either way if its leaking at the base, its likely not seated right on the hole. If the toilet has been shifting, just be aware that you may still need to do the ring at some point. Again, very easy.

Get the one that is a bit taller and has a black platic collar that will sit in the drain, makes it easier to align.

^What Chip said. Assuming that you have eliminated two small boys as potential causes of said leak....

Real easy fix. Other issue might be the connection on the water line at the base of the tank. I'd put a paper towel down and see if you can pin point which part its coming from.
