Michael M. asked: Members. I will be building a new shop this summer. 30' x 40'. Most will be a auto shop with tooling around the room. Do you have any suggestions on tool placement inside the shop? I was thinking of locating my shop tools in order of the Grit they produce. I would put my two grinders first, then my belt sander, the band saw, the cutoff saw. Then my radial arm saw(wood)Etc Etc, what do you think of this ideal? Any suggestions?

Christopher S. answered: dunno if this wil be of any help to you or not. it's the Grizzly Workshop Planner that is on their website. I have used it, but I'm severely CAD challenged, this is a very easy method of plotting out your shop floor. You wil have to create a user name in order to save your plan Hope it helps. Best, T2 http://www.grizzly.com/workshopplanner

Christopher S. answered: only thing I would add is avoid having the grit-producers anywhere near the precision tools if you can manage it. When you say "first", that would be first in relation to what feature? Closest to the door, or dust collector?

Rick R. answered: My auto shop has a wing which will be devoted to metal production. It will be lined with sheet metal and designed to be fireproof for welding, forging, cutting torch use and related tasks. Ventilation will be provided to exhaust fumes. For me my main machine shop will be in the attached garage on the farmhouse but I will have a drill press and one lathe in the wing.

Michael M. answered: First would be by the a roll up door. I do plan on the center of the shop to be open.

Darryl F. answered: I'd try and keep any spark or heat producing machines segregated from the combustable dust producing ones and ventilate accordingly.
