I'm attempting to get a rusted, stripped screw out of a hinge so i can restore a piece.
How do I get the damn thing free?!
Joseph C. answered:
Drill them out with a small drill bit then re thread the holes
Donna P. answered:
I unfortunately, do not have a power drill.
David D. answered:
Don't use any liquid if you plan on painting, staining or finishing. You'll never get if out of the wood. Cut or grind the screw head off and remove the hinge. Clamp the remaining screw with vise grips and screw it out. No tools? Drive to Shelby tomorrow and I'll do it for you.
Clemmie H. answered:
I would either carefully Drill them out, as has been suggested - OR, clamp a set of Vise Grips tightly on the Screw heads, and use that to unscrew them. If you're lacking a needed Tool, this is your excuse to go buy it. That's how we guys amass our collections.
Alex B. answered:
Take a Phillip screw driver and hit it with a hammer a fee times an loosen it up
Del H. answered:
easy way drill them out
Roger G. answered:
Lowe's sells something called speed out. A set of 4 is $15. They work miracles. You need a drill to use them. They are the best thing I have found.
David D. answered:
I don't know what you mean by the "Waco line" but I am near the Y in Shelby.
Vince M. answered:
get a fine file and carefully file away the screw heads. Remove wood. Screw shatfs out with pliers. Then clean up the hinges and replace to the wood with new screws.
HowardandHaley A. answered:
Take a Phillips screwdriver and line up with screw head. Take a hammer and hit back od the screwdriver hard. It will make the screw notches deeper and turn them out.
Joseph C. answered:
Thats the only way to get those out
Michelle L. answered:
Knock heads off with flathead and hammer
Donna P. answered:
Thank you Joseph Clemente, I'll see what else I can do before I try that though. Michelle Lewis, how would I get them out after? I need to reuse these holes so I need the whole screw gone.
Donna P. answered:
Also, thank you both for answering. I'm truly stuck, I got the other end and side out no problem. This set is just being a pain.
James P. answered:
Use a hack saw and cut a line in the screw then use a regular screw driver.
Michelle L. answered:
Have you tried wd40 yet spray srews let set over night
Mary T. answered:
Goo gone and let it soak
Tony F. answered:
You're gonna need some tools. Sometimes you can saw a straight line across the middle of the screw so you can stick a screwdriver in it to get a good grip. You will always have a chance of the head breaking off and then you will either have to do the drill thing and maybe go with bigger screws with new hinge. Try the WD 40 to help it not to snap them off. And worse case you can move your new hinge over enough to get fresh wood to secure it. Depends on what you're working on of course.
