  Make sure the vet you use is experienced at OFA submission x-rays.....go to the OFA site (offa.org) and read about positioning so that you can understand what you are looking at when the x-rays are done....ONLY the OFA, the SV or Penn Vet (for Penn Hip) are acceptable organizations to pass judgment on hip structure. The submission to OFA is about $45 I think, to the SV about $175 via either USCA or GSDCA....only registered vets who have taken a class to do them can submit to Penn .... prices for actual x-rays vary widely from area to area....I pay about $400 here in Western PA

  Please do you due diligence, insist a breeder health screens their dogs, you will be able to veiw results at www.offa.org A good breeder will care about bettering the bred and want to produce health happy puppies. It costs a lot of money to do these screening, best way to know a breeder cares, not just doing it for a quick buck, also best type of insurance for you to get a great family pet 🐶👍 good luck on your search.

  I'm so sorry for your loss. Please make sure you do your homework and check dam and sire health clearances yourself at the OFA website. Unfortunately some breeders claim their dogs have extensive clearances that they don't actually have :( http://www.offa.org/

  Reiterating from below. One of the most important things to look for is health testing. Make sure to see proof of that. Hips minimum, but preferably elbows, heart and eyes (through cerf). You can verify ofa testing via offa.org

  For all those in the USA, all dogs that receive an OFA certificate for anything (hips, elbows, heart, eyes, etc., all results are posted online on the OFA database. Only passing results are automatically posted. So if a breeder tells you the dog has been certified free of this or that, you can look up the dog on the OFA website. Www.offa.org

  I keep telling people to do their homework. When purchasing a puppy not only should you go back and check the parents, but go back at least 3 generations. Then and only then you'll get the complete picture. Many people complain about the costs of qu ality puppies but Laurie Moretti , what is it costing you for all the meds he needs. ASK for the documents!! Actually, the OFA normally has records of all health testing by reputable breeders. OFA = Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. www.offa.org

  Just wanted to point out the importance of good clear Hip x rays done by someone who knows what they are doing when submitting to OFA for a rating ~ the x ray on the Left side was done by my local vet , position is not good & the film could be clearer, dog was lighlt sedated , it was sent to OFA who did not give a rating but said re do in 6 months ~ which I did ,photo on the Right side, I used a different vet highly recommended for doing great OFA's & no sedation ~ the dog OFA'd Excellent.

  I have had this discussion before with a Dobe friend,I know They must be parallel, meaning they are across from each other, its like a of folks think the OFA just looks at how the ball fits into the socket when in reality it a lot more points they look at I think it 8 or 9 different things http://www.offa.org/hd_procedures.html

  Gina - OFFA.org says "female dogs should not be tested during an estrus cycle" regarding thyroid testing. I would wait a few months.

  I suggest first making sure you do your research on each breed's parent club website and check out their preferred breeders list. NEVER TAKE THEIR WORD FOR IT! Always cross reference health testing results with www.offa.org. If they aren't listed, either it wasn't done or the dog failed.
