He’s demonstrating some aggression towards men (barking, following them and circling them which is not good) and inappropriate dominant play behaviours with other dogs. Was taking to a dog trainer that has one of this brothers (he’s much better behaved) and she recommended an e-collar. I’d always thought of them as the cruel shock collars of old but apparently they are actually pretty humane and could be a good training tool for him. There are loads on Amazon and elsewhere but wondered if any one in NZ could recommend a brand for a large dog? Thanks.Sacha B. replied:Shock collars have a high risk of fallout in fact they’ve been banned in around 10 countries, most recently Ireland I think? There’s no need to use one esp w fear based issues as your essentially associating pain w an already fearful trigger. Happy to help if needed www.doglife.co.nz or can recommend someone in your area.Narda K. replied:Please dont use a shock collar they are terrible and if a trainer needs to use one they aren't a good trainer the best trainers ive ever used ate force free trainers like Sacha Bee at doglife nz or a behaviorist like dr jess beer or dr elsa flint talk to them first i have a fearful girl a trainer used a collar on and made her worse i now use sacha bee and my girl has become so much better its all about slow steady progress not quick fixes

Elise L. asked:Our 3 year old Affenpinscher Boy who is having problems with his behavior! 2 main things, 1st he barks at all noises at home! There is a cat next door that attacks our cat so he is always in the garden patrolling for the cat but has extended to the whole house now and driving us crazy! Second problem is that he has now decided he doesn’t like strangers. People coming into our home he will warm up to eventually(at least half hour of them ignoring him) but has extended it to the park now and anyone that is there when we get there and anyone who arrives, even if it is the same people every night he barks and howls if goes near them/them near him! He has always had anxiety problems and in the last 18 months has got so much better but in the last 2 months has spiraled again! We have had him off the furniture and sleeping back in his create! Any help/tips would be AMAZING! We would love to meet with a trainer early next year to get the best advice so any recommendations on trainers would also be great!Sacha B. replied:Given the behaviour is escalating I’d suggest a positive reinforcement trainer before Xmas if possible, even just to get you started w follow up in new year just to keep it from escalating further.
