  If you want to band them, sooner is better. It causes a longer raised cortisol level than castration, which means it is painful for longer. Testicles should be descended before doing either, which happens much sooner than 11 weeks. In wethers the urethra is narrower than bucks and some believe early castration worsens this. I believe pain Meds are important if you do it later. We do castration at your home, call Wasatch Veterinary 801 662 8092.

  Does anyone know a horse nutritionist I can contact? I just rescued a pony that is believed to have cushings. His owner let him get very thin bc she was afraid of foundering him. He was placed on meds for cushings but not tested for it. Can't be tested until spring I was told. I need to get some weight on him.

  You can blood test for Cushing's, the interpretation can be more difficult at certain times of year. You can use medications in combo with food (Yvette is great), to keep your horse in the best shape. You can contact us at Wasatch Veterinary (801 662 8092) if you would like us to come and do an exam and bloodwork. It is always a good idea with a new horse to have an exam done if a pre purchase wasn't done.
