We are renting, so a plumber came through the landlord. An element was burned out, but more importantly, our unit was FULL of chunks of calcium (it took him forever to get them all out, they won't drain through t he spigot) and what not from the hard water in Jeff City. We do not have a water softener but it would help this problem. Maybe yours is similar. You'll probably need a plumber, not an electrician. It didn't look like too hard a fix, just time consuming. If it's a new water heater, check the warranty. Maybe someone will come fix it on warranty. Stephen D. replied:Not done it myself, but from what little I know (mostly from familyhandyman.com) it is a project you can do. Turn off breaker, drain, unhook, remove. The biggest challenge may be where it currently exists-if it is easy to get to. Of course, this is assuming you need to replace (and not simply repair) your current one.
