My puppy Lea started attending private lessons and daycare when she was about 5 months old in August 2016. We were told by Dave that he was going to send us training videos & materials to read. We never did receive any of these. We continued with Lea's private lessons (mostly with Nikki) & with Lea's daycare which is supposed to include training (I think sometimes she gets trained and sometimes she doesn't -- because there will be days when there is at least one video of her and other days with no video of her). Lea was fearful of most of the other dogs in the facility (tail tucked in, crouching, hiding, etc). I mentioned this to them and they said they would work on that. Most videos of her playing that are on their FB page shows that they were not quite able to get her comfy to play with the other dogs. I told them that Lea was leash reactive with other dogs & that she barked a lot. Dave Cochran (the owner & trainer) said that the barking will cease over time since she was a puppy then. The barking did not cease. They said they will work on leash reactivity when we move her to Group Obedience classes in January. Our other dog, an English Golden Retriever (5 + months old) started daycare in early Nov. On 11/21/16, I dropped Marcel & Lea off to daycare between 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. in the hands of Bernie (their new hire who used to be their client as well). At 9:40 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. that day, I received a phone call from Nikki stating that Marcel had been bitten by another dog in the nose area plus on the underside of the upper lip. There are scars in both regions. Marcel hadn't been to any daycare sessions since the 11/21/16 incident. I dropped Marcel & Lea off on 1/9/17 with some trepidation because Bernie was there. When I brought Marcel in, she said to Marcel something to this extent, "Oh! You have a scar. Well, it builds character." Why say this out loud? The dog doesn't understand what she was saying. I was within earshot of her saying this (because I was hanging his leash up). Why make light of a full on bite incident? On 1/16/17, at group obedience class, all 3 trainers decided to one way or another (at different times) blame Marcel being bitten on 11/21/16 on Marcel's friendly puppy behavior while he was at daycare. Marcel has socialized with a LOT of dogs at various parks---off leash! Nothing has ever happened between Marcel & another dog due to his friendly disposition. I am extremely vigilant when my pups are playing with other dogs though! If I trust my puppy into your care, then I trust you to be vigilant when he is playing with other dogs. This vigilance means you must always read all dogs' body language at all times! If you think that my puppy's behavior was going to get him bitten, then you as the caregiver for the morning must do something to curb his behavior, take his attention off the other dog, or take him or the other dog out of the play group! This is especially so when they knew that the other dog (who was either a full pit bull or pit bull mix, named Camdyn) didn't like being licked! I am not sure if Bernie knew it because she was a new hire at that time. If she didn't know it, then she should NOT have been asked to supervise playgroup. Dogs often don't just bite immediately. There are warning signs. You can hear them and you can see their body language. I posted a public Facebook post the next day on 1/17/17 and tagged SMYD on it because I was annoyed by them repeatedly mentioning that it was Marcel's behavior that caused him to be bitten. They need to just give it a rest and let us move on -- we already have Marcel's scar to look at each day to remind us of the unfortunate incident. Blame should also be apportioned to the caregiver at that time. Dave expressed his displeasure with this and instead of asking politely for me to untag his business from the FB post, he was rude. He expelled my dogs from his training facility. He blocked me from the SMYD FB page. He definitely lacks customer service, doesn't value his clients, and overreacts!
