Thomson Stiffest stem ever !
Steven H. replied:
Yes, the Pro Vibe Track is the stiffest, but probably doesn't clear the Scatto. As an alternative, try the new Zipp SL Sprint. Don't be fooled by the 'SL' moniker, it's a nice and heavy stem. A step down from those, the carbon 3T, ENVE, and Bontrager stems all perform extremely well. Of course in aluminum, the Thomson X4 is a good bet, also Easton's Havoc and Haven MTB stems are very beefy. The Pro Vibe road stems are good, but can "only" be used in the drop orientation (not rise). The aluminum 3T stem is OK, but honestly anyone who's recommending it probably hasn't ridden a SUPER stiff stem. It gets a little flexy at the long end of the range (140mm especially). If you think the aluminum 3T stem is particularly stiff, you must normally be riding a Ritchey stem. ALL RITCHEY 4-AXIS model stems are notoriously flexy. That being said, their carbon SuperLogic C260 looks amazing. Of all the high-end, modern aluminum ROAD stems, the Pro Vibe and the Deda Zero100 are some of the stiffest. Rhys, yes the cheap version of the 3T is the same stem, the only difference is stainless steel vs titanium bolts (Deda does the same thing with the Zero100).
Bike Shops w/Stock??? Does anyone know of any COS bike shops that currently have a good selection of full suspension bikes? Trying to get into biking this summer and...

I was at criterium last week. They seemed to have a decent selection. Better go today though.

I ended up making a trip up to Wheat Ridge Cyclery, Denver, this past Fall to get a mtb. Their website seems to be very up to date with current stock. That being said, you should look at [TheProsCloset.com](https://TheProsCloset.com). They're located between Denver and Boulder, and sell "certified pre-owned bikes". I actually sold them my old mtb to fund a new one.

My buddy just got a sweet Trek at Ascent after a brief wait.

Consider buying direct from Canyon.com if local shops have no stock. I try to support my local shops, but the lack of stock and price increases due to supply and demand is a good reason to look elsewhere. Bought a Canyon Spectral full suspension and love it. Great pricing and delivered direct to my door. Good luck on your bike search!

https://routesoutfitter.com/ might have a few of their demo fleet for sale. They also order Revel and Guerrilla Gravity. A lot depends on your budget.

I think the new REI building houses their bike selection. I'm not sure if it opened yet, but they typically had a couple bikes sitting around back when they only had the one building.

Why not try to buy a used/rent a bike first to see what you really want/need? Too many people go and blow a ton of cash on a bike that is overkill for what they really use it for.
Mountain____Goat replied:
If you're new to mountain biking, I'd consider buying a hardtail. Full suspension is nice but really just a luxury and won't necessarily make you a better rider. Also, you can get a better equipped hardtail for the same price as a poorly equipped full suspension. Just about everything in our area can be ridden on a hardtail anyway, unless you're looking for the more technical lines. If money isn't the main issue, go ahead and get the full suspension. I know that doesn't solve the limited bike stock in the shops, so don't rule out used. That can get complicated if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, but there are deals to be found.
Does anyone around Boulder know of someone selling their mountain bike? Mine was stolen and as much as I LOVE running everywhere, the amount of training I'm doing is...
Performance Bikes on Arapahoe and Folsom have a huge selection of a wide variety and priced bikes; check em out online and then go test them out; they always have insane sales.

CU has a bike auction in the fall. I don't know when exactly, but it will be in the next month or two. Typically, bikes can be bought for around $150 with a lock. Edit: September 18@5:45 pm

Hate to break it to you but at those price points you aren't talking top end. Those are mid to low end pricing. Especially for carbon fiber. Carytown bikes does sell bikes on consignment. Not sure who else in town does.
