Hey guys, just wondering if anybody can recommend a good surveyor for a Dutch barge we are interested in? It's lying in Shepperton boatyard atm. We have spoken to one...
Freya J. replied:
Hi, Simon Kidd from http://www.southernmarinesurveys.co.uk/ surveyed our Dutch barge (also a tjalk) when we bought it three years ago. We had it lifted and he did a full hull survey. I hope you already have a mooring in a marina they can be hard to find. Best of luck hope all goes well. We are in a marina near Brentford now.

Highly recommend John Tough, based in Twickenham: 020 8977 4494

Ok we know the OP is getting a mooring, but one point to mention though, in theory, you *can't* get a continuous cruiser for the Thames as there isn't one, you would have to hold a Gold license - which is a CRT/EA license for canals *and* EA waters. EA waters (i.e. the non tidal Thames) comes under different laws/legislation to the canals, see. And there is a maximum boat size limit for the gold license, so if your boat is too big for the gold license, you need a mooring on the Thames *or* you have to spend most of your time on the canals, but would only be able to visit the Thames by purchasing visitor licenses, there is a limit per year as to how many of these you can buy, think it adds up to about 6 to 8 weeks per year. So if your boat is really big you don't want to be in a position where you can't fit on the canal nor cruise the Thames, you will need a mooring somewhere. It's not possible to cc the tideway through central London, either as there is barely anywhere where mooring is permitted - the tiny handful of places where you can usually need to be booked well in advance and it's only permitted for overnight. Especially with a really big barge, get the mooring first. The Grand Designs barge programme (it's on youtube) is a great education as to why. ;-) Hope this clarifies for anyone else interested.

Surface water flooding. Search gov.uk - surface water flood maps. Make sure you select surface water on the left hand side of the page. Its never fun rehoming residents and contacting your local lead flood authority when the building is wet inside.
