Knowing what kind of system the home has is a good first step. Probably not a terrible idea to call a septic service outfit and have them perform a flow test to make sure that there are no issues with discharge or the leach field, depending on what kind of system the home has. I goofed when I bought my house by having the septic tested but no real checking of the line between my home and the tank, which came back to bite us in the ass. Sewage backed up into our shower the first week we were in the house because the line was broken and full of roots. If you love the house, don't be afraid to spend a little money now on a quality inspection.
